I know our kiddos hear it prolly 1000 times a week the word twins. But when do they understand it? I have been explaining it to my boys for several months now. They will answer twins when I ask them certain questions but not sure they really understand it yet. They are in preschool now and I am trying to keep them as individual as possible as they are soooooo different in all ways size, shape, personality etc.

    Any thoughts?

Sometimes I tell my kids "You're twins, that means that before you were born, you were in mommy's tummy together, at the same time." And they love talking about it - "Twins! Mommy tummy same time!" Now, how much they actually understand, I have no idea!

Mine seemed to start getting it just before they turned 3. It may be partly because they've been in daycare since birth and everyone knows they are twins. So it's been impressed upon them from a very early age, not just by me. Anyway, at this point they do know what it means for a woman to have a baby in her tummy, and I think they understand that they were in my tummy together. My SIL also had twins within days of my twins' 2nd birthday, so we were talking about "Aunt ____ has two babies in her tummy" throughout her pregnancy and they could actually see her belly.

Well, they know about it, talk about it, know it is special. But I don't think they totally get it.

    For example....gross story disclaimer...

Several months ago my darling son pooped in the potty. He screamed for me, "Mommy, look, look." So of course I come running and look in the potty. He responds with glee, 'Look Mommy, TWINS!" pointing to two poops in the potty.

To the kids, TWINS just means TWO.

Mine are almost 5 and their understanding of twins is that twins share a mommy's tummy. Then they asked me if their cousin Josiah was mean because he didn't share his mommy's tummy. I told them that he took turns.

Anyway, they have no grasp that sometimes being a twin means sometimes you look alike. Timothy knocked a tooth out. Their art teacher made a comment that her daughter also knocked a tooth out and that she and Timothy could be twins. The kids both looked at her like she had 3 heads.
