When do they start wearing shoes?

    Hi,

This is probably a very silly question, but the twins are my first kids, and I just can't figure out when they should start wearing shoes. They're five months old, and I know there's no reason for them to have shoes now, since they don't walk or even crawl. However, at what point do you start putting shoes on your kids? Do they wear shoes inside the house? They'll be going to day care at about nine months old, so I'm thinking they should wear shoes there, but maybe just footie outfits would work?

    What do you all do?

We don't wear shoes. I can't even find any to fit them. I just put socks on them or outfits with feet in them.

I have my guys start wearing shoes when they are walking and may step on something sharp/yucky/whatever outside. We don't wear shoes in the house.

Mine don't fit in any yet! I guess we'll cross that bridge when they can actually wear some!

At our daycare, most of the kids (including mine) in the infant room were barefoot (or wore Robeez). In the toddler room, they are required to have "hard-soled shoes" because they go outside a lot, and there are also more things on the floor to step on. But even that is a pretty loose requirement -- hard-soled just means anything that isn't a slipper, so things like Pedipeds (i.e., pretty soft and flexible) would still qualify. But they really don't need shoes until they are walking, and even then, only if they're outside or might step on things.

I bought my babies their first pair at 14 months when they were walking well.

My son just got his first pair today, he is 13 months in 3 days, he walks mostly around the house, with no shoes he couldn't attempt to walk outside.

Just make sure to go in and get a proper shoe sizing, even if you don't buy the shoes from there. I never would have thought my son would wear a 4.5W, but that is what he was sized at today. An online place said he was a size 3, so definitely get a proper sizing.

I agree with this!! I bought a bunch of shoes because I thought they were cute and they never wore one pair. I put them in Trumpette socks (they look like shoes...very cute)

I put mine in Robeez until he was walking when I went out somewhere special. They're soft soled leather slip ons. It was mostly for aesthetic purposes.... cause they looked cute. Once he started walking, I got him some proper shoes fitted at a specialty children's shoe stop. I don't think that doctors really recommend hard soled shoes for babies before they start walking.

For the whole summer, they were pretty much barefoot. They were born in December, so like a PP said, during the cold months I used to just put them in socks or pants with feet. Recently, since it's getting cold out, I bought the wanna-be Robeez at Target (made by Circo) and they are great because my two can't pull them off, no matter how hard they try! And they're pretty cheap, especially in comparison to the Robeez.

ETA: I just Googled Robeez b/c I wasn't quite sure exactly what they looked like. Anyway, they don't look like Robeez at all. But I think these are cuter and only 9.99! Robeez are close to $30! These are the shoes I got for my girls. I got other different pairs as well..... http://www.target.com/Pre-Walk-Girls-Circo...mp;frombrowse=1

I started putting mine in soft soled Koala Kids sneakers at about 6 months old - but only when we went out - it was hitting Thanksgiving time and it was getting colder...around the house they wear socks or slippers (if they'll leave them on - most of the time they're barefoot)...

I just wanted to second what another poster mentioned...If you do put shoes on before they can walk, make sure they are soft-soled. When they're first learning to walk, they really need to be able to feel the ground. Barefoot is best!
