When do they start to go to bed later?

My babies put themselves to sleep very well (usually) They don't need to be rocked, just need their pacis and their loveys. Naps are still 2 a day - 1 1/2 hours each, and they go down great for these - no fussing or anything.

The problem the past two weeks is bedtime! Since the time change they will NOT go to sleep at 7 anymore! They usually wake up from their 2nd nap at 3 pm - so I usually put them to bed at 7 and they would sleep until 7. Now when we put them in their beds at 7 they immediately start fussing and all out crying. I have never done CIO and I don't think we could do fullblown CIO. They usually settle down and fall asleep around 7:30.

So my question is, do they just need to go to bed later now? When do LOs start to go to bed a little later? And, when we drop to one nap, will it get even later? (since they might sleep past 3?)

Thanks for any advice! You all are so helpful!

At that age (and now still) my two go to bed at 7:00/7:15. They dropped down to one nap at 18ish months. :good:

I would say no. Mine are 30 months and still go down at 7 and wake up at 7. 7 pm is a pretty standard bedtime for a long time. May need to tweak naps but not bedtime, i don't think.

My guys actually started to go to bed *earlier* when we transitioned to 1 nap! They used to go to bed at 8, but they don't take very long naps any more, so they are ready to go down by 7:30 now. So when you transition to 1 nap, you might put them down at more like 11:30-12 and they will nap longer, but still go to bed early.

I would try to move bedtime up by like a half hour. Mine all go to bed between 6:30 and 7 they do talk and play for awhile but then fall asleep on their own. When we first went to 1 nap they went to bed earlier. GL!

Their bedtime has stayed the same between 7:30-8 and they are up around the same time in the morning. My two did not go to one nap until 15 months.

i found that for us, one of the signs that our girls were getting close to dropping a nap was that their bedtime started getting later & later. we would put them to bed at the same time every night, but we'd hear them in there babbling, giggling, fussing or sometimes full on crying for longer & longer each night. then, as PPs have said, when we did drop to one nap, we had to move their bedtime much earlier for a while until they got used to the new routine. now we're back to a 7:30pm bedtime.

unless your LOs are really hysterical, it doesn't seem strange to me that it may take them up to a 1/2 hour to settle before actually falling asleep. if it were me, i wouldn't worry too much about it. i kind of think of it like this: it's your job as the parent to make sure your LOs are in a quiet, peaceful place where they can sleep at age appropriate times throughout the day, and it's their job to decide when/if they're going to sleep.

if you are really concerned about it though, you can always try adjusting nap & bed times and see if you can get something you're more comfortable with. i would guess your LOs are still a little young to transition to one nap, but who knows, every baby is different & you will know best what they need. GL!

We have started letting them stay up a little longer recently and now their usual bedtime is more like 7:30 rather than 7:00. On days that they seem particularly tired (like yesterday after their egg hunt) we put them to bed closer to 7:00, but if they are happy and content they usually get to stay up and thankfully our reward is that they go straight to sleep instead of 20-30 minutes of fussing and talking and banging! When we moved to one nap at about 16 months, we did move their nap up (out of necessity - they just couldn't make it that long and still can't). They will now sometimes sleep three hours but that puts them waking up at 3:00 and that is the latest they usually go, more often it is one nap of about 2 or 2.5 hours which doesn't really affect their bedtime at all since they need that sleep and they are still waking at the same time or earlier in the afternoon. Good luck - the transition was harder in my mind than it was in reality and I actually like the slightly later bedtime because it sometimes means dinner is pushed back a bit, and we get a little more happy playtime!

I live in Spain so the timetable here is very different. Mine did the 7pm-7am when they were small but about a year ago we moved to the 9pm-9am routine. One they start school we will have to change that but it works well for us now.

In your shoes, I´d tweak the naptimes to a little earlier so they are tired for 7pm. Otherwise, I´d just put them to bed 30 mins later if that suits your family routine. GL!
