I can't remember when the twins started sitting up on their own. My Son is 4 months old though and can sit up by himself for short periods of time (a few seconds here and there) He's barely starting to roll over (rolls to one side, but not back, I know this is normalfor this age)

I can't remember how old is normal for them to start sitting up on their own???

I would say 6 months is average. Mine were early sitters at 5 and 5.5 months, sounds like yours might be also.

if i take the time to balance them both my girls can sit on their own for a couple of seconds - then they lean, and whomp! over they go. :D they think it's great fun.

DS managed to sit unassisted and sit up the same day, around 7 months. DD started sitting unassisted at 8 months but still hasn't figured out how to sit up on her own.

I think 5.5/6 months to sit up is very early...

Mine try to do [sit ups] when they're sat on the couch. . yeah, and then them topple over. But we do sit up practices and as long as we hold their hips, they do pretty darn good

Mine are 6 months. My little girl can sit up unassisted for a minute or so, and is learning to balance herself. My little boy topples over like a domino though! I chalk it up to weight. DD has a more sturdy base (read: chunky monkey), and DS is a smaller build, so not as much stability.

Mine just turned 6 months. DD can sit up for maybe 20 seconds at a pop, she has a good base...my son is a frickin wet noodle but he is getting better. At their appt last week the doctor got them referred to physical therapy! After reading this, sounds like them not rolling or sitting up yet is completely normal. Argh!

Now I'm confused, are people talking about sitting up or sitting unassisted? It's really not the same thing.

Not sure, mine start to sit up unassisted between 6 to 7 months. Sitting up in a bumbo seat was around 3 months or so.

I'm confused, too! Can you guys explain what you mean by sitting up?

My twins can sit up if they are in the boppy, on my lap, or between my legs on
    the floor.
If I left them alone they would topple over, although one of them really uses those
abs & arms to balance. They need something "around them", even if it is just my arms
    hovering.

They are almost 6 months. Are they on track?

    I'm confused.

I always considered "sitting up" as them being able to get themselves into the sitting position and stay that way without any assistance.

Same. Otherwise it's just sitting, isn't it? That's why I said that 5.5/6 months for sitting up seems very early.

yeah, my girls definitely can't do that yet - nor are they close. sorry to confuse folks! :) my girls are really just barely starting to be able to hold themselves in a sitting position, but i've got to do most of the work for them.

Mine are 7 months and can sit on their own (without boppys or whatever). They've been able to do it since right after 6 months. One of them is able to get to a sitting position by herself and has been doing that for 2 weeks now. The other could care less about getting up by herself!

Ok if we are talking about getting in and out of sitting by themselves than I would say 7 months. What I meant was I could put my boys in a sitting position at 5 and 5.5 months and they could sit there unassisted until I got them out of it or they decided they had enough. They didn't even use their arms to support them. But it was closer to 7 months when they could get in and out of it themselves. I guess there is a range of what sitting up really means.

Yea, I meant sitting in the sitting position too. He's FAAAAR from being able to put himself in the sitting position. He practices 'sit-ups' but doesn't get any further than his head off the couch. If I PUT him in a sitting position, he will hold himself straight up for between 5-10 seconds, then he slowly starts to lean forward until eventually his nose is touching his knees if I don't fix him! LOL This will last a total of about 30 seconds to a minute. He hasn't figured out to lean to one side or the other to get himself out of the sitting position.
