when do they need to be 'entertained'?

My twins are 5.5 weeks old. I'm wondering at what age do they start to notice toys, and/or need to be entertained when they're awake. We don't have any kind of playmat or mobile, etc. yet - at what age did you start using those things to entertain your babies while they are awake? At what age do they start noticing toys and be interested in them? Wondering when I need to go out and buy some of that stuff.

    thanks!

I dont think either of mine noticed toys until about 4 months when they were able to hold their head up without support for a small period of time. But they were preemies so I guess it could be earlier?? They seemed to look up at stuff while they were on their playmat but not much. They were blobs for a long time ;)

We started using the mobiles and playmats when they were 2 months old. Tiny love has a multiples program, buy one get one free.

Ours just started noticing toys, etc. It took a long time for them to go from staring intently at toys to grabbing them (which they are still quite clumsy at).

My little monsters just started picking up the rattle and kicking their floor gym parts last week. They are now 3.5 mos. What's even more exciting is that they are beginning to track motion with their eyes, whether it is on the TV or with something in my hands. And the new noises every day make me eager to get up in the morning!

It certainly is a process, that occurs in steps. First they notice they even exist, then they look at them, then they track them, then they reach for them, etc.... I'd advise getting a few toys for them to look at even if you think they're not interested. That's what we did, and then once we saw they were interested in them, we bought a play mat.

Hope that helps! It sure is fun to watch them develop an interest in what's going on around them!

My guys didn't notice toys until the 3-4 month range. Before then sitting in a bouncy seat or looking at mom was highly entertaining.

Yep, that and being in the swing entertains my Katie bug.

Hey Lisa, congrats on 5.5 weeks! Time flies doesn't it? My guys started laying on their Tiny Love playmat at about 2 months. They used swings and bouncers also. By 3-4 months they started trying to get into the toys hanging on things and we did a lot of tummy time too.

    Have fun! Love their pics!

Ditto on the blob part. Mine spent a LOT of time in their bouncies and swings for the first couple of months...

Tiny Love - a kind of playmat (also known as a gymini)...just google it and you'll see (sorry, too tired to post a link!). We called ours the 'crack mats', because they were addictive as crack; the girls would lie on their backs and play with the toys that dangle - it was a great way for mom to get 15 mins or so of time to do something (like, say, make and eat lunch!)...until they started rolling, that is...but you're a while away from that!

I would highly recommend your checking your local craigslist: i got mine from there; it retailed for close to $50 and i got it for $12; all i had to do was throw it in the wash (but not the dryer!). I have gotten tons of stuff and saved tons of money on craigslist.

You will also eventually want TWO exersaucers - same thing, check for gently used on c-list or a local consignment shop. I thought i'd be able to get by with one but - no way, they are my saviours!!!
