I am 14 weeks tomorrow and feeling ready to start buying the things we need at the start, like cribs, car seats, etc. I have complete placenta previa and the doctor has told me I should plan to have everything ready by 28 weeks because I will likely be on bed rest and the babies may be early.

The problem is, I went to get the cribs today and MIL was with me -- she kept saying it was too early to buy them, "what if something happens" etc and I was so upset I didn't buy them. When I got home, DH said the same things to me!

Sure, something can happen -- something can happen to anyone at any time, I don't see that as a reason to not do anything. I want to be involved in preparing for them and if we don't start soon, I might not be able to.

Am I really jumping the gun on this, or should I ignore the naysayers?

I dont think its too early. Im 9 weeks and I am about ready to order carseats. ;) I htink that if you feel good, you want to be able tos hop for your stuff right? Go for it momma...Your right, something CAN happen at any time. If we all lived with that kind of attitude, what kind of life would that be?

I started buying things after the first trimester was finished...we had 2 previous miscarriages so we wanted to wait until we were further along...At about 18 weeks, we bought the stroller and carseats as they were all on sale, then about about 20 weeks we bought our cribs...the nursery was ready, and i really want to have things in place. I just need to get the dressers and i think we are set for big items.

I think you are fine to start getting things now...it does take time to get everything.

    Good luck

I didn't buy anything until after my shower at 29 weeks BUT I didn't have any problems either. I think if you want to get started go right ahead. Tell your dh and dmil that buying stuff isn't going to change the outcome of the pregnancy! Actually, it may, because if you're not stressed and done unpacking and washing, you will be more relaxed!

I bought carseats at around that time, because they were on sale. But I was the cautious type, I didn't really start purchasing things until closer to 20 weeks. I was just really nervous.

But I think you should do what you are comfortable with doing. :) There is always something to be said about mother's intuition.

I haven't bought anything yet but that is because we are waiting until we find out the genders (which will hopefully happen at our next u/s scheduled in 2 weeks time). I will however be creating a file for all the receipts just in case anything needs to be returned.

We were moving to another state toward the end of my first trimester (just three weeks ago!), so our church ladies really wanted to throw a shower before I left (I was about 9w along at that point).

I did worry a teeny bit at first (those stupid what-if's!), but after the shower, seeing the baby things made the pregnancy feel more real, and it was actually quite reassuring to see and touch the baby things.

i started buying stuff right away!! You have to look on the bright side!

Also--i had a complete previa when i was 12 weeks, and my dr told me that 90% of them go away on their own, and mine already did. So maybe yours will too!!

I couldn't wait to buy stuff! I stopped by Carter's on the way home from our 8 week ultrasound (when we found out we were having twins) and bought a few outfits. I made my husband go back with me when we found out we were having boys too. He wasn't really into buying anything else until after we had a baby shower and he saw all the "cool" baby gear. We were given two cribs maybe around 12 weeks or so and I couldn't wait to start shopping for other big things. It is a good idea to start shopping now. You may be able to keep an eye out for sales and good deals rather than waiting until the last minute. Realistically, something could happen during any pregnancy--multiples or not. You shouldn't let worry and fear dictate your excitement or enthusiasm in preparing for your childrens' arrival. I'm sure we all go through phases of worry anyway. For about a month, I was terrified to ride in a vehicle with anyone else (including my husband) because we tried so long to get pregnant and I was afraid something would happen on the road. I'm a first time mom, but I doubt that the paranoia and fear ends anytime soon. ;) Enjoy your pregnancy and go shopping! Find a supportive family member or friend to go with you and enjoy every minute of it!

I went shopping to pick out everything I wanted pretty early (we found out at 7 weeks we were having twins). We wrote everything down and held onto it until we found out the genders at 19 weeks. But, if you want to buy stuff....do it. There is nothing wrong with being prepared early. Besides that will be one less thing you have to worry about later. Good Luck to you mommy!

I'd say if you are comfortable do it now. Especially if you might end up on bedrest. I am on strict bedrest, and not have to rely on others to set up and get all my stuff.

I started buying stuff at 18 weeks when I found out the sexes. I bought clothing and the bouncer seats. I was also worried about when I would be put on bed rest since I have had 4 miscarriages before and I was already having trouble walking due to RLP. It was a good thing I started when I did because by the time I was 24 weeks I could not get out of my car with out help. Now I am on complete bed rest. So dh ended up picking out the cribs. Don't get me wrong he did a great job, but it is not the ones I wanted. I still have to get swings and things to bathe the babies with and I have no clue when I will be back on my feet. Do what you think is right. If you want to buy stuff then do it. You should be able to have fun picking out things too. Believe me you deserve it.

Just keep a positive mind and everything will be ok. I know that is easier said than done. I worried all of the time and when dh told the doctor I worry too much she told him it is ok for me to worry. That shut him up.

I haven't got anything yet. I know I'm going to get a lot of stuff from family and friends at the showers they are having for me, so I'm going to wait and see what I get before I go shopping. So far all I have is some clothes that my mom bought them, and every time I go to the grocery store I pick up a pack of newborn or size 1 diapers and wipes. We've been buying diapers since we found it was twins. I might go buy their carseats this weekend because they don't have the ones I want at the place I registered.

I waited until around 18-20 weeks to buy anything. I wanted to find out the sexes first.

We really haven't bought too much for our twins. We registered at 20 wks after we found out the sexes and have gotten almost everything as gifts; crib, carseats, stroller, pack and play, etc. I think all we've bought so far has been the wall paper border and a second stroller. We still have one more shower next weekend and after that I'll send DH to babies R us to pick up the rest of the necessities.

I think you should do what's comfortable and don't let your DH and MIL get to you. Like someone else said, whatever happens, happens and buying some things for the babies will not change the outcome. :hug99:

I waited until after my baby showers so that I knew what I would get as gifts and what I would have to buy for myself. My showers were held quite early - at 22 and 24 weeks. I bought all the rest of the stuff between 24-30 weeks. At 30 weeks, I was too big and uncomfortable to go shopping without pain. I was SOOOO glad that I had everything all done by then.

Lindsay ~ So glad to hear your placenta corrected itself, I really hope mine does, too!

Thanks for the replies. My MIL said yesterday to wait until I find out the sexes, but I don't need to know the sexes to buy cribs or a stroller, you know? I will hold off on bedding and clothes and things until we know sexes, but there are just so many things to get that I want to start NOW!

I told DH we are going crib shopping this weekend and we are coming home with cribs, dangit! :icon_biggrin:

Personally I would hold off on buying the large stuff. I started buying clothes and other items very early on. However, we are having problems & my mother-in-law just bought a crib week before last. We'll see.

I didn't buy anything until after my shower either because I wanted to see what I would actually need and I knew there would be gift cards to use. We also wanted to wait until we found out the gender of the baby (which ended up being babies :D). You are past the first trimester so I would say you can buy things whenever you are ready. If you want to compromise with DH and MIL though, maybe you can wait a few weeks until your indept u/s and find out the genders.

I won't have a shower, so there's nothing to wait for there. Even if there is a shower, we don't have family here, it would be just a few friends and I know friends aren't going to get me a $300 stroller or cribs, it'd mostly be clothes and smaller items. :)

I did end up having a small shower. The biggest thing I received was the bath/shower. We bought some unisex clothes before we found out the sexes. We had tried for so long, I just had to get something to celebrate. After we found out the genders, DH and I went to BRU to register. I found that if I give him the scanner, he has more fun. If it is on the registery, you can always change it on the computer later. Besides, at least you have seen and touched the products, so if DH has to go buy them later, you won't be surprised.
We put absolutely everything on the registery, and if we bought something ourselves, we showed it as being bought on the registery, so ppl would know. The cribs and dressers we got used from a family in our twins club. I still put down that they were bought from the registery, who would care? I agree with PP, enjoy your pregnancy and ignore the naysayers!

We started buying things here and there after about 16 weeks. We had the bedroom fully set up at 24 weeks!

    this is a tough one!

I did not buy much last time and I was glad. I had my son at 22 weeks and he did not make it; however, knowing that I may end up on bedrest early on, I am thinking about at least registering the things I DO know I need.

If I am not on bedrest at 20 weeks when I find out the genders, I will start buying the big items then.
