When did yours roll over?

Discussion in 'The First Year' started by three_precious_girls, Jun 24, 2007.

My girls will be 4 mo this week and they havent rolled over yet.... in fact they arent even trying to. Is there a way other than tummy time to promote this? When did it happen for you?

Mine were very late rollers!! I really think they were just lazy  . Ben started rolling at about 6mo. and Jake did not even try until more like 7mo. While they were late starters, once they did start rolling they seemed to pickup everything else really quickly. Shortly after rolling they were crawling and then pulling up and now cruising and "trying" to walk. I just made sure to give them plenty of "floor time" with tummy time being part of that. They were (and still are) stubborn and always do things in their own time. Just relax and make sure to give them floor time and they will do it when they are ready. It's hard not to worry, but they WILL get there in their own time :D

I had late rollers too. Mia rolled at 6 and Emma at almost 8. When I thought they were doing something "late" I liked to use their adjusted age :D

I have heard that they just need to figure it out for themselves. I think you can help them learn to crawl but not roll.

    Don't worry they'll figure it out :)

My girl rolled front / back 1 day before 4 months ... then she only did it occassionally. My boy started rolling back / front at around 5 months, then my girl started to roll back / front and my boy front / back at around 5 1/2 months ... at 6 months they're rolling all over the place.

Both of mine rolled tummy to back two days before they were four months. They did it a couple of times and then stopped until they were almost five months. They didn't start rolling back to tummy until around 7 months.

i also had late rollers- DD around 6 months, DS around 7-7.5 months. DS actually was sitting up before he was rolling! he just wasn't interested!! as long as they are on target with everything else- making eye contact, using their hands, using both sisdes of the body with play, etc., i wouldn't be worried. just keep getting them down on the floor, have some toys jsut out of reach so they have to work to get them. they'll figure it out. I think one reason mine rolled so late (esp. DS), is that early on they wren't on the floor much, due to how long it took them to eat and DS having reflux and not layign flat. and they both HATED tummy time. once he got past teh reflux and they started getting stronger and more comfortable with the floor time, i think they started figuring out more how to move. yours will get it- dont' worry too much!!!

BTW- i do the same as pp, and tend to use the "adjsuted age" when they aren't quite as far along as others their "real age" ;) convenient, huh!

My DD just rolled over the first time today, back to tummy. she turned 4 mo old today. the funny thing is, she hates tummy time and usually cries during it. today she was getting mad b/c she wanted to roll or just had an uncontrollable drive to do it, was happy for a second after she finally rolled, then started to cry b/c she wanted to be on her back again.
    DS is still trying..
I would say just get them plenty of floor time when they can wiggle all around safely and start trying to move their bodies both on their tummy and on their back.
I am sure yours will be flipping around before you know it.

ps don't be surprised if they start trying it during the middle of the night in their cribs first...

Lorien started to roll over just after 4 months and Arwen didn't roll over until 8 months. I would say it's waaaaayyyy too early to worry. It's really different for every baby. But I'm sure you know that already.

Mine are 4 months and they don't roll either. I didn't know they were supposed to yet?! I wouldn't worry. I bet, like with most things, there's a huge range.

Both of mine were almost 6 months when they rolled from their back to their tummy. While DD can roll back to her back from her tummy , DS gets stuck on his belly and looks like a skydiver in mid-flight.

Mine haven't rolled yet... they haven't even started trying! I really do need to work on more tummy time, I think it would help. They just hate it! Maybe if I let them fuss on their bellies for a little while they would roll to their backs!

Addison did it day before yesterday and Ava hasn't and doesn't seem like she will anytime soon!!! oh and Addison has not done it again! I think the only reason she did it in the first place was because I had left her in her crib for like 10 minutes while I bathed Ava and she was MAD MAD MAD!!!!!!

Mine rolled from front to back and back to front by about 4 months. But they couldn't wait to do so! They hated sleeping on their backs. As soon as they figured out how to roll over, they have slept on their stomachs from that point forward. So I think they were determined to get on their stomachs on their own as quick as possible. So I totally think it's a baby preference. When they feel they want to do it, they will. I remember reading a post here one time that a girl got yelled at by her pedi because her babies weren't rolling at 4 months. The pedi said it was her fault because they didn't have any tummy time. GRrrr....I would have just totally laid into that broad/dude but that is besides the point. :nea: It is not anything YOU do, the babies will do it when THEY are ready. I really didn't put them on their stomachs that much before 4 months, they just figured it out on their own....and yours will too! :D

Hi, I can't remember when Rebekah rolled since she's been doing it both ways for awhile, but Rachel just in the past three weeks FINALLY figured out that she can get places by rolling. I think she was 8 mos before she rolled from back to tummy. Maybe 6 mos for tummy to back. AND she hated tummy time. What I finally did was I would roll her a little each day before she figured it out on her own. Then after she did it the one time I didn't worry because I knew she had the ability but was lazy. She is rolling a lot more now, and she's even on her tummy and liking it! So, I wouldn't worry if they aren't rolling at 4 mos! That is really early to worry like the pp said. I think it's normal to roll from tummy to back first by around 4 -5 mons? And the other sometime after that. Just remember once they are rolling all over the place it's a different world! They will roll when they are READY and worrying will not help them do it any time sooner! I had to learn that the hard way with my firt DD. I know it's hard not to worry, but just know they are fine. HTH!

My DD has rolled over for the past month or so sporadically but my DS does not seem interested in the least to try. He is more content to lay there than to even try. I figure he will get it eventually.

  16. Im going to post an update...but I will put it here first...baby B just rolled over this morning!!!

My boys are just about 15 weeks and no signs of rolling yet, although David does lay on his side and he may be getting close to thinking about rolling over.

My DD (now 2) rolled over early, at just under 3 months.

Lily rolled at 5 months. Grace could roll from back to tummy I'd say at 5.5-6 months, but never went the opposite way or rolled all around until 11 months.

My son started rolling back to tummy shortly after 4 months. Within a day, my daughter started rolling tummy to back. Neither has figured out how to go both ways yet! They'll figure it out eventually. Our doctor said that once the rolling starts, you better start childproofing the house because crawling isn't too far behind!

Let's see ... Chase rolled first, from back to tummy, at around 4 months or so. But he still can't roll back (actually did it for the first time last night in his crib, so we'll see.) Con took longer to roll from back to tummy, like around 5 months, and about 2 weeks ago I walked out of the room and came back to find he had rolled consecutively all the way across the room and hit his head on the TV. So he all of a sudden figured out how to roll tummy to back when I wasn't around! Now he rolls around like a nut and Chase still can't ... so you never know how they will end up developing. Mine still can't sit on their own yet.

I would agree! Also, like the other post mentioned if your twins were early then you need to go by their adjusted age.
My DD rolled at around 6 months and my DS just rolled yesterday at 8 months. Both are listed at their actual age. If I went off their adjusted age it would have been 4 months and 6 months for rolling.

I forgot to add that was only from tummy to back. Neither have rolled back to tummy. HTH!
