When did your twins start to really play with each other?

    Hi all,

Right now my girls are still in total parallel play which I know is normal. I have heard that they don't actually start playing "together" until about 2.5-3 years. Was this your experience?

Also, right now I am noticing that they usually just see each other as someone who is often in their way from having mommy's full attention. Today, Lorien was actually pushing Arwen away from me so she could have me all to herself. It made me really sad :( I think I was most sad that Arwen might understand what she was doing (though perhaps she doesn't understand yet??) and it would make her upset. I want so much for them to get along growing up and I'm doing what I can to instill kindness and sensitivity in them (although I know they are still too young but never too early to start trying right?) Lorien has always been my affectionate one and even tried so many times to be affectionate towards Arwen but Arwen didn't want to have anything to do with her. I always wondered if that made Lorien feel rejected? I'm probably being overly sensitive and I know I can't push the issue with them but I just want to make sure I am doing what I can so that they grow up loving each other and not hating each other (although I'm not saying they will NEVER have fights and get POed at one another. I know that is inevitable).

Mine started to play with eachother at around 2 years. Now they are pretty much like other little kids in the way they interact. There are still times when they don't want to share me, "No, that's My mommy!", but they are usually okay.

If you count taking toys from eachother mine are doing that now.

Seriously though, mine aren't playing together yet, but I am looking forward to them doing that. Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Yes, 2.5 to 3 was when they started doing things like making up stories at their dollhouse together. They played with each other from about 2, but truly interactive play like "writing" a story together was 2.5 to 3.

Maybe once a day the boys will chase each other around the room and into corners, taking turns and laughing histerically, but other than that they still do the parallel play and of course - toy stealing LOL

Mine play together and still parallel as well - started around 2. They are very good buddies and I am so happy about that (except he's stepping on her as I write this and she's screaming! Oh the irony!!)

Seeing each other mainly as an obstacle is totally normal at that age. Mine got over that a few months ago. Now they steal toys from each other, and they don't really play together, but at least they recognize that the other child is a person too!

They are also learning to be helpful -- not to share, but to bring toys (and shoes -- mostly shoes) to each other. Sarah knows that a few toys are Amy's alone, and she will bring them to her (even if Amy doesn't want them). We just give her a lot of praise for this. As far as teaching them to love each other, I think that will come later. For now it may be all you can do to teach them not to hit and bite each other. ;) But you can also model love and affection (hugging, etc.) which I'm sure you are already doing.
