Jessy's new thing is "Hi Y'all or Bye Y'all". I think it's so cute. So when did your kids start showing their accents and what did they say?

I don't know, but that's something I've wondered. I think I have no accent, but I guess it's a little bit of a Maryland accent. My DH has a bit of a Boston accent, it's not real noticeable except for some words. So I've wondered how the kids are going to end up sounding.

The second he started talking! Every morning, my oldest would pop his head up over the side of the crib and go "hiiii" with that southern drawl of his. My accent is really bad. It's a mix between Georgia, Texas and Mississippi.

Well, Tabbi, I never really thought about it. Lynae is just getting to where she will say "hi" to others and wave at the same time. We were at a restaurant in Edmond with Mom and my niece Kimberly. Lynae walks from booth to booth waving and saying "hi". Now that I think about it......she did have a bit of southern drawl. I'm not too concerned though, because dh's brother and family live near Nashville.......I never knew that "hi" could be two syllables!

Oh, I hope no one thinks I'm awful. We also live near Nashville, and the girls started picking up on the accent from PBS (we are not from here). I correct them to a more neutral accent. I don't mind regional words like "y'all" (I'm from Texas, but my parents are from Wyoming), but I don't want all the extra syllables. I love the south, but I am less fond of the way people who aren't from here assume a southern accent indicates a lack of intelligence. :(

Now they're picking up MIL's grammar patterns (she's German), so they'll say things like "I want a sandwich with some peanut butter in."

I have two part time hillbillies here! They were born in SC, and we lived there and in TN for their first 2 years, then we moved back to OH. DH is from SC, so he has a little draw, and as soon as I hear someone else speaking southern, then I start doing it. We also listen to Country music, and the song by Tim McGraw with the lyrics "1,2,3, like a bird I sing" is in perfect hillbilly! We are planning on moving back down south next year, so they will be able to talk hillbilly all they want to, and not get critized for it up here in Ohio!

I'm originally from TX, and I say Y'all all the time... mine have yet to say it.

Up here in KY, (the parts where I am at) there is a heavy country accent... mine have yet to use it... but I am sure they will.

Do we have an accent in Maryland? I don't think we do, but maybe it's because this is how we've always talked. We have never said ya'll so I don't think we have an accent, and my oldest is 6.5 years old.

The MD accent really shows in the "o's" like phone, coke, saying Hon (which I never say!), "going downee ocean" chimbley instead of chimney, am-blance, zink (sink), Warshington. Some examples of really bad MD/Baltimore accents are Marty Bass and that JBA Chevrolet guy, off the top of my head.

My accent really isn't bad until I get excited and then it all goes to pot. Both the girls say Dog as Dawg.

I'll have to listen for that commercial although I don't watch the Baltimore stations much. But I do know who Marty Bass is and I do hear a lot of people say Warshington or warsh. I don't say it, but my dad does. I know there is definitely a Baltimore accent (Balmore however you spell it). But since I'm more on the DC end of things I guess I didn't grow up with it. I guess there is some kind of accent everywhere.
