When did your DD hold their bottles?

I am wondering when your DD's started holding their own bottles. It seems that boys do it earlier so that is why I am asking about DD's.

    Thanks for your responses!

I know you asked about girls, but I have two boys who are not interested in holding their bottles at all.

Both of mine started trying to around the same age. I forget when they could do it because neither would for a long time. But within the past week DD has started holding her bottle pretty much all the time. DS is still not interested in doing it. He'd rather me do it.

Mine both (DD & DS) did it around the same time. They learned about 3-4 months, and would do it most of the time by 5 months, I think.

My DH taught them to do it to make our lives easier.

Still waiting. I think Karina is getting close, but Annelise isn't really interested at all.

I know you are asking about DD's, but I just had to say that my DS's hadn't been the least bit interested. And then... My mom visited for a week and kept the boys. Every bottle time she put their hands on the bottles and coaxed them to hold it and let them play with it. The two little fiends now want to hold their own bottles all the time (although they aren't quite coordinated enough to hold 8oz very well, yet - they can certainly manage after it gets down to the 4-5oz range). So we now help covertly for the first few ounces and then they do it on their own after that.

It made me kinda sad that they won't really need my help for much longer, but I am sure I will appreciate the freedom in the not too distant future to just hand them a bottle and then be able to walk away and get other things done. I can't wait until I can just put the bottle in the side pocket in the stroller and have them grab it whenever they are ready when we are on the go! Wow... can you see the sunshine, smell the breeze, and hear the music? :) What a pipedream!

The moral of this story is that babies are probably much smarter than we give them credit for. It never occured me to "teach" them to hold their own bottles. I just assumed they would - when they were ready. So if you are interested in having them do it sooner rather than later, help them learn how.

I will say that it's not all roses when they can do it themselves, though. The boys sometimes want to play with the bottle when I am in a hurry for them to eat so we can get out of the house.

They can hold their own bottles :p Mine never did, and they took a bottle until they were 18 months old. I never really tried to teach them either.

Both my DS and DD started holding them within a week of each other and I am pretty sure DD was first. They were 5.5 months old.

Both my exclusively breastfed babies (b/g) were able to hold their own bottles at about 7 months when I went back to work part time.

mine still don't. I know they CAN do it, because they've done it a few times, but they are not interested.

Jake just started to really hold his. For awhile he would hold it but could not figure out how to tilt. Josh still enjoys me holding it for him. What I think helped is I bought bottles with handles on them for when we are out and about. At first it was a new toy but as least for Jake, he realizes that he can feed himself and now he can hold bottles without the handle.

I know you said DD's but I just wanted to say that my boys didnt do it until they were at the end of the 9th month just in time to start dropping bottles.

My one can but not very well and the other one not at all. The smallest one just doesn't have the muscle strength and coordination and too small hands. I havent' really pushed them, they have always seemed to learn most things when they are ready to and for this they don't seem ready.

Natalie was around 9 months old. One day I got so tired of holding her bottles for her so I just gave her the bottles and the rest she figured out on her own. She fussed a lot for about one day while she learned but life got so much easier after she started holding her own bottles.

DD has NO interest. Jack has been doing it for a couple weeks (still only when he feels like it! :) )

Both of mine (one DS and one DD) held their bottles right around 6 months.

I made it a point to start "teaching" them at the end of 4 months. I just let them hold it and get comfortable grasping it (8 oz size) and encouraged them by placing their hands on the side of the bottle while I held it. They're about to turn 6 months and Lily now can completely feed herself, and Brandon can hold the bottle, but doesn't tilt it correctly to get to the bottom half of it. Every bit of independence is WONDERFUL, in my eyes. In the mornings now I bring Lily downstairs first, change her, place her in her bouncy seat, and just giver her the bottle. Then I go upstairs and grab Brandon and help him with his bottle ONLY WHEN HE NEEDS HELP.
I remember with my oldest daughter I had no idea she might be able to hold her own bottle at 5 months until her little friend did it. It hadn't dawned on me to let her try, and I was pleasantly surprised when she caught on quickly.
