When did your babies start to babble?

    Hi there,

I know I'm not suppose to compare my babies' development and that each baby develops at their own pace, but I am now getting a little concerned that my 7 month and one day old son has not really started babbling like his sister has been doing for over 2 months now. He makes noises - growls, grunts, screams, moans, and sometimes does single vowels - like "ahhhhhh", but no consinent/vowel combos (dadada, mamamama, bababa) yet. He hears very well and responds to his name and other noises, and is developing normally in every other way, just no babble. Is he just the strong silent type or is this abnormal? At their six month appt the Pediatrician mentioned a slight concern that he wasn't babbling, but then said not to worry.

Has anyone else had late babblers?

    Thanks.

It was between 9-11 months when the babble started to become more consistent. We had late babblers too. Dont worry it will come.

If you are really concerned, call your pedi. to talk it over, but I wouldn't be concerned yet. I have one twin who is my talker, and one who is my mover. Both are at the early age for talking or moving, and at the low end of the age range for the other. They are just different. I agree - it is so hard to compare, though.

I considered posting this exact same question. Neither of mine do this yet, that I can tell. They "talk" in other ways and make tons of noises and my daughter constantly blows raspberries. But no consonant/vowel combinations. The dr asked about it at their 6 mo checkup and said, well probably by the end of the month then. But I'm a little worried too.

I have one that just started two days ago and now she won't stop "talking." :) The funny thing is that she was the one that EI thought might be "communication delayed" because she was so quiet up until now. I think it's just her personality. My other baby makes noises all the time, but they are only vowel sounds. They are 9.5 months old, but about 7.5 months adjusted.

My DD started making dada, gaga sounds at about 7 3/4 months, and my son not until a few days ago! He is more the mover though. I was a little worried about my son as well since he didn't make anything other then ahhh sounds, but it was like a switch flipped and one day he started baba, gaga, dada all in one day!

I wouldn't worry at 7 months. I think my girls started at 8 or 9 months. As long as he is hearing fine and making noises I'm sure he'll do it one day! My girls seem to be on the late end of hitting most milestones, babies do things in their own time.

ditto, lots of noises but no real babble sounds. Just yesterday DD1 made a sound that started to sound more like a vowel than a screach... I was a late talker and so was DH so i'm trying not to worry...

Still no dadada etc here. They talk a lot, and make sounds, but that's about it.

Mine aren't dong it yet. They sat early and one is already attempting to crawl but no real babbling. I guess they're to busy doing other things.

Thank you for all of your responses, I feel better now. I love this site!!! I know I shouldn't worry, but I have moments that I just start obsessing about it.

They may also start and then stop. DS that is the mover still doesn't babble much. He kisses, blows raspberries, yells and makes tons of noises but after a short babbling phase around 7 1/2 months, it's rare we get an actual mamama or dadada. Bababa comes a little more often. DS2 babbles all the time. It's a constant stream of talking and has been for awhile now, he started before DS1 too.
