Our babies babble a lot, and one is beginning to try to repeat sounds. They say mamamama a lot when they see me and they are upset and want something or are just upset, and dadada alot whenever they are happy. but they also say dadada to me when they are happy ;)

They also make other babbling sounds... our boys are 11 months old.

But no sounds directly related to people or objects yet.

When does this start? What is the normal range?

I think they are supposed to actually "talk" close to around age 2. Mine were late talkers but were saying mama and dada around 1 or so.

Mine all said their first words somewhere in the last quarter of the first year. I remember Josh's distinctively, because he saw a ball and said the word 'ball' right at 8 months when we were on vacation. I think he was the earliest talker of the 5.

Here is a good article about speech development.

Mine really varied with what age they were when they said their first words. I think the twins were right around a year. I remember thinking they were never going to say anything!

I can't even remember what they were doing around that age. Not saying much as I recall! I know our pedi was looking for around 20 words at 18 months and even that wasn't really a big guideline. Trust me, they will start talking, and you will not be able to keep up with all the new words in a few months! Just in the last 2 months, mine have doubled or tripled the number of words they know.

You have pretty much described my boys. Right now they are developmentally within the normal range. If my boys don't have a few words and follow a simple command by 15 months I will probably pursue a speech eval. I am all for EI!!

my pedi seemed a little concerned at 15 months when I said we didn't have any words... I went for a sick visit a month later and saw a diff. doc and he said that he looks for 3-6 words by 18 months. Finally this month I think we're getting words - at 17 months! of course I think if we really listened more we'd figure out more words that they are saying, but it all seems like babble.

in the mean time, I have done many signs with them, and my ds is a little better than my dd... its SO darn cute when they communicate! ours sign for: Eat, Water, Banana etc .... we're now getting words for mama and dada, banana, bubbles (so important I guess), ball...

    they'll get there!

All of mine have been close to year before they actually said real words.
