    Hi

i'm still in my first trimester but i've been reading lots of stuff on twins and i'm just wondering when people stopped working

I work in an office about a mile from my home. I sit at a desk all day and don't deal with clients or customers except for a couple phone calls a day.

I'm wondering if people DO work till the end or does EVERYONE go out early?

I'm just trying to prepare. I won't get paid if i go out as I just took 3 months leave this year when I had my son and they paid me my full salary. I can't expect them to do the same again. Can you get paid disability??

When did you stop working and what kind of work did you do?

    Thanks

I was a Nanny working 40 hrs a week. I took the kids to school picked up. took them to sports functions, cooked dinner and gave baths. Their parents were never around so I was pretty much mom and dad to these 2 children. I work up until 2 weeks before my boys were born. I was never told to leave work but I wanted a few weeks to myself before I was a mom to my own kids.

I was put on bedrest at 29 weeks, pregnancy was uneventful until I started dilating. I qualified for FMLA medical leave, but had to use my own vacation/sick leave for it. The only thing the medical leave did was guarantee 12 weeks off and still have a job. I did scientific research in a laboratory, so on some days quite a bit of standing, on others, mainly sitting. I had a long commute and long walk from parking lot, and seemed like miles to the restroom. Towards the end, no chair, couch, bed, position was comfortable....

    HTH!

It totally depends on your job and your pregnancy. I'm a teacher and the OB told me at 20 weeks when we found out we were having twins-just after school got out-that I could not work past 28 weeks. That meant not starting the next school year. Long story short, I ended up seeing another OB due to availability and he was much more supportive of seeing how I was doing rather than a blanket statement that women pregnant with twins shouldn't work past 28 weeks. I started the school year and made some adaptations-ie moved my overhead to a table so I could sit instead of standing at my overhead cart as I usually do. We have to negotiate stairs to go to the lunchroom, so a co-worker eventually volunteered to walk the kiddos down for me which was a big help. I worked the day I was 32 weeks 6 days and really just didn't feel good-slept about an hour and just felt restless all night, went to work but was beyond exhausted and cried all the way home after staying two hours late working on sub plans because I knew something was going to have to give. I had an appt. the next day at 33 weeks exactly and thought it was time to talk to the OB about going out on sick leave. Not only did the OB I saw that day-mine was on call at the hospital-say no more work, I was sent to labor and delivery due to suspected pre-term labor. I was 2cm dilated and 80% effaced. I got steroids shots for the girls' lungs and terb to stop the contractions I was having but not feeling-prob. what caused the awful restless night of no sleep. Things worked out for me and I ended up carrying the girls for 5 more weeks and delivered at 38 weeks 1 day.

Sorry this is so long, but my point is it depends on your body and pregnancy. Katelyn was at 0 station for over 2 months by the time she was born and her head put a lot of pressure on my cervix which caused the cervical change. I also knew it was getting to be too much at about 30 weeks but was bound and determined to make it to 35 weeks since that worked better with my school calendar and available leave. Listen to your body and your OB and figure out what is right for you!

    Good luck,

    Angela

I drove a half hour to work and back, 5 days a week. I worked about 43 hours, 5 days a week up until the day before my scheduled c-section (twin A was breech), when I drove myself to the hospital! I had a desk job and an ob who would have given me a note to get out of work, but that would have driven me batty to be home! AFter work I would go home and take a 2 hour nap! (my hours were from 4:00am - noon)

I've heard of some OB's that just automatically insist you are off work by 28 weeks. I had a great pregnancy with no morning sickness, no high blood pressure and no contractions.

I'm also a teacher and worked until 32 weeks. I was constantly on my feet and walked up and down a flight of stairs 12 times on an average day at work (school is on a hill) and I really think that all the activity kept me in shape. I was very tired and sat whenever possible toward the end, but I had a great pregnancy. I was happy to be home for a few weeks before the girls arrived at 37 weeks (docs orders) just to sit and do nothing for a bit. Those 5 weeks rushed by very quickly and we still didn't feel ready when the girls did arrive. We didn't even have the hospital bag ready. As for time off, I had to use my sick days for maternity leave. Luckily we ran into summer vacation or I'd have used all the time up. I went back to work when they were 11 weeks old.

Best wishes. Just take it one day at a time.

I worked up until 24 weeks and 3 days, but that was because I had PTL and was dilated at that point, so I was hospitalized until 34 weeks. I worked at a Reproductive Endocrinology office at the front desk and was on the phone and on my feet pretty much all day. My OB had already told me he wanted me on home bedrest beginning at 28 weeks, but the babies had other plans!! [IMG] I did receive disability money a few weeks after the delivery, but I think it was because I was hospitalized for so long! Trust me, it is all about the babies at this point and cooking them for as long as you can!! Those were the longest 67 days of my life, and I was soooo scared for my babies, but I would do it all again for the end result we recieved......2 perfectly healthy, beautiful babies with no NICU time!!! Best of luck to you! [IMG]

I really think it depends on the type of job situation you are in. If you do spend much of your time sitting at a desk, you could easily work through week 32 until sitting is just uncomfortable. It's also up to the way your pregnancy progresses though.

I teach 2nd grade, and am on my feet constantly. I did manage to work until I was 33 weeks exactly, which was my goal. But I was only able to do that because I had the aides take over all my recess duties, walking kids to specials, etc. I basically sat to teach and had the kids come to me, which was really hard but it helped me keep those babies in until 36 1/2 weeks!! My ob was willing to write me off work at 28 weeks, however, if I'd have wanted. Talk with your ob and see what is typically done.

I had a cerclage placed at 12 weeks and was put out of work at 19 weeks due to some unexplained pains I was having due to the pregnancy and not the cerclage.

I was paid the whole time I was out from diability up until after my 6 week checkup. I was then released back to work after my 6 week check up and then took 12 more weeks of CFRA leave. I was paid for 6 of the 12 weeks so basically I was not paid for only 6 weeks the whole time I was out. I returned back to work in my same position but demoted myself to part time at night so I could care for my babies during the day.

I guess it all depends on where you live. I live in California so they have a lot of benefits here. My husband is also allowed to take 12 weeks of FMLA leave for the birth of a new child with 6 of those weeks paid. He can take it anywhere between birth and 1 year. I would just find out what laws and benefits your state has.

I think it really depends on your pregnancy and if there are any complications. My ob recommended I quit working between 28 and 30 weeks although mentioned I could go back after 32 if all was well. I had a high stress job and worked an average of 60 hours a week with a lot of night and weekend work. At a weekly appointment at 29 weeks I was hospitalized for PTL and remained on bedrest until my water broke at 33 weeks.

I had a somewhat difficult pregnancy with morning sickness that continued until week 29 and contractions that began around 14 weeks. Everyone is different; listen to your body!

I left work at 28 weeks. The reasons I left were: an hour commute each way (it was getting uncomfortable for me to drive) and my job required alot of lifting, bending, etc. I worked in network support. They told me I didn't have to do those things but I found myself getting very frustrated always having to find someone to help me so I decided to leave. If not for those factors I could have probably gone longer since I had no complications.

I stopped working at 32 weeks. At 28 weeks my doctor told me he would write something that would qualify me for short-term disability provided by my employer, but I decided to keep working until 32 weeks. By 32 weeks my hour long commute was getting really uncomfortable and sitting at my desk and in the courtroom was uncomfortable too.

Some states provide disability but for most people disability is something you pay into at your job. I knew I was pregnant when I started my job so I signed up for short-term disability. It cost me about $18 out of every paycheck, but allowed me 26 weeks of time off at a rate of 66% of my normal salary. You don't have to pay taxes on STD checks, so 66% turns out to be pretty close to what you normally take home.

    Hope that helps.

I stopped working at 28 weeks. I had a desk job, but I was having a lot of BHs and I needed to lie down. I was also pretty uncomfortable at that point so it wasn't worth continuing to go in to work.

I was a 2nd grade teacher and worked up until the end of the year when I was 31 weeks. I had a wonderful pregnancy except for some swelling at the end. I rested until 35 weeks exactly when my water broke. The doctor said he would have encouraged me to leave work at 32 weeks had the school year not ended. Good luck to you! Get some rest now . . . as much as possible anyway!

I worked until 36 weeks. I had a totally uneventful pregnancy with no complications. I admit I was pretty uncomfortable at the end, so I took 2 weeks off before my scheduled c-section. I had a desk job and I mostly sat a lot otherwise I don't know if I could have done it. My OB was trying to get me to go out around 31 weeks but I didn't get paid for maternity leave so I stuck it out!

    Good luck!

I was put on modified bed rest at 24 weeks/5 days, but fortunately I have a job where I can work from home. I had already been preparing work that I would have to start working from home, but I didn't expect to be on my left side!

My last day will be Friday - I'll be 32 weeks. Between the 2 hour 2x a week NST and trying to work on my left side, it's just too much.

Also, my bp could go crazy at any time and this way I can transition out. If my job could be more part time, I would probably try another week or two, but my job just isn't like that. It's been good though, as work has started to phase me out of projects since my end date is in sight.

In terms of benefits, I will get full pay until I deliver, then I get 8 weeks for a c-section. After that I will use my vacation and then I go into FMLA for up to 6 weeks. So we shouldn't take too much of a salary hit while I take 4 months off. I feel very fortunate.

My plan was to go full-time till 30 weeks, part-time till 34, then quit.

The reality was that I went PT at 26 weeks because I just couldn't take a full day anymore (and I have a very low-stress desk job -- I just couldn't stand sitting upright and not being able to nap). Then I quit at 29w after spending a night in the hospital with contractions. They were able to stop the contrax and I spent the next 8 weeks lying on the couch, taking terbutaline round the clock, but needless to say, didn't to back to work till after the babies were born.

Good luck -- twin pregnancy is hard but when your babies are here, it will be worth it.

I had to stop working at 30 weeks- there was suddenly a big weight difference between the 2 babies so they recommended that I not
    work.

My doctor told me from the start that at 24-25 weeks he'd have me stop working as a precaution. I had a high-stress advertising job with an hour train commute, so I was very relieved by the time I stopped working. I went on modified bedrest at 25 weeks and worked part-time from home. Then at 27 weeks I went into PTL and was on hopsital bedrest 2 more weeks before the babies were born.

I worked up to the day before I had the girls. I went in for my weekly doctors appointment and the doctor put me off of work I was so happy and then she said that there was a problem and I had to go for an emergency c-section. I was 2 months early.

I worked till about 28 weeks.
It was a desk job, but the pains in my side got so bad, I'd have to lie down for part of the day.
Finally, I just threw in the towel...

I worked 2 part time jobs. For one I was a receptionist and worked it until the tax season ended (I was about 32wks). The other was a shoe salesman at JcPenney lifting, and carrying shoes around. At the end I was only working about 12hrs a week at that job. I stopped that one about 34wks 3days. It was a friday and sure enough Monday I was in the hospital for contractions. They gave me a shot of something and they stopped. I carried the boys until 36wks 6days when I was scheduled for an induction. I quit working primarily because it was getting to hard to reach shoes on the top shelves in the stock room, and the women would lecture me for hours if I tried to use a ladder. Not to mention all the "are you going to have those babies in the back room?" comments were starting to get annoying.

I am a pediactric and pregnancy dietitian. I had to stop working at 26 weeks. I started having a very irritable uterus so the MD made me stop.
