When did you stop warming formula?

My boys are going to be 6 months old on Thanksgiving Day (where did the time go?) and we will be starting them on rice cereal that day. Anyway, that got me wondering, when do you stop heating formula? I had been thinking that when they reached 6 months and started solids that I would stop heating it but now that we are almost to that milestone, I'm just not sure if I should stop or need to stop doing it. Then I considered maybe not heating any of their bottles except for the last night time bottle (I guess since warm milk is supposed to be calming?) What do you all think?

    Thanks for your help!!! :icon_biggrin:

I quit warming it long before 6 months. I got tired of waiting for the bottle warmer to actually warm the formula. So I just started mixing it as they needed it. But now since about 8 months I started making up bottles again at night for the next day and putting them in the fridge and letting them drink them cold. They are totally fine with it. So I think you can stop anytime you want too.

We warmed bottles until they stopped taking formula. None of mine have ever taken it cold, so we just kept doing it.

I give them cold milk and water in sippies, but I still warm their formula bottles. I think it's basically just an issue of personal preference when you stop warming them.

I warmed right up until the end. Not real warm, just enough to take the chill off the fridge temp.

When they went off formula. :) Seriously though, we did give them cold formula in sippies starting at around 10 months, and still warmed the bottled formula. The last bottle of formula they got was at 12.5 months, it was all cold milk in sippes after that. We did the cold formula in sippies to get them used to the cold milk idea.

I have never warmed formula. They stopped getting formula at room temp when we ran out of ready made formula and switched to powder. That was at about 2 weeks old. It has come straight out of the fridge since then.

My friend who adopted always gave from day 1 straight out of the fridge. They asked the pedi and she said it didn't matter. If they will drink it cold it is fine.

I recently stopped warming it. I fill a pitcher full of water in the morning and mix it luke-warm with bottles all day.

Room temp is the way to go! It's so easy just to fill a few bottles with water and then add powder as you need it.

I'm still doing it - Kellen would drink anything but Colby HATES a cold bottle.

Good question as Lucas will take room temp but not cold and Jonas refuses it unless it is warm and I don't mean just the chill-off warm...I mean warm.

So, I've been wondering about this because I don't know how I'll transition them to regular cold milk (I'd like to start adding some milk in their formula in a couple of months to transition). Hmmm....

Each night I fill the bottles for the next day with water. (8bottles total - 4 each) and I also fill the little divided formula containers for the day as well. I have one for each child with powdered formula and one with cereal. Each bottle gets 2 little divided containers in each bottle. I shake the bottle and feed it straight to them.

I mix formula as they need it so I don't warm anything. Our NICU nurses told us that using formula that is too cold may cause stomach cramping and fussiness although I've read that an occasional cold bottle can help relieve teething pain.

I usually mix it with room temp. water. If I have pumped milk or a bit of formula in the fridge, I warm it.

I transitioned them to room temp bottles at about 2 months old. We like to travel and they often ate out of the house so room temp was much, much more convenient. We didn't see any difference in their behavior.

To transition to cold milk (at one year old), I replaced 1 oz of their room temp formula with cold milk every 2 days. After about 2 weeks, they were drinking milk straight from the refrigerator.

Our boys still won't take it cold, although we try every now and then. Last week I was at the mall, feeding time with no way to warm the bottles (usually I just ask for some hot water from a nice food vendor, but the boys had already been overwhelmed by the food court once that day and I didn't want to subject them to it again!) and two boys who didn't want to drink it cold. So there I sat with two bottles between my legs to warm them, while trying to keep the boys happy with puffs and fielding all the 'are they twins' well wishers!

Obviously based on all the posts, it's up to the babies more than the mamas or doctors whether to stop warming!
