my boys are not quite 4 months, so I figure I should come up w/ a plan on how/ when I want to start them on sippies. I don't remember when I started my other kids on them. I think it was between 4-6 months though. are there signs to watch for that tell you they're ready?

also, what should I put in their first sippy? formula, juice, water??

and what's your babies' favorite sippy? I don't have any for them, and can't decide what kind to start with

We have started working on sippies in the past month or so. I put juice and water in them. I use the Baby Einstein sippy cup.....I have not liked the Nuby or Nuk brand at all.

I started at 10 months and my guys weren't interested in them at all. Then, at 12 months, 1 week I gave them sippies and they just took to them. I threw out all bottles then, and there was no looking back.

I started out with the Nuby's which have soft spouts. They are easier for kids just transitioning from bottles. BUT once they learn to bang the spouts against things, and liquid seaps out, you have to change to hard spouts, LOL

We started on sippies at about 5 months, and they really just chewed on them until 8 months, only getting a sip or two, here and there. I started off with the Nuby sippies, and they really didn't like them, and neither did I, because you have to hold them up for them, or lay them down for them to drink out of them. So we switched to straw sippies at around 8 months, and they are doing great with them. I have never put juice into thier sippies, only water and milk/formula, and mostly milk/formula. I would start with a soft spout sippy, like the Nuby's, it will make it easier for them to figure out that there is something in the cup! Good luck! :)

I started putting water in the sippys and having it on their highchair tray at 8 months. We always used water until we went cold-turkey to milk in the sippy at about 12 1/2 months of age. My favorites have always been Playtex line of sippy cups. I think the easiest ones for the kids to use to tranistion is the Nuby's, but they leaked too much for my taste.

We started around 5 months. We also started w/ the soft spout nuby's however, now they think that they can chew on the hard spout ones and get stuff to come out. We are currently very frusturated b/c of this. Anyway, I also only put formula in them and in the past week juice/water combo (only 2 oz) @ lunch.

    GL!

I started around 5 months with water. They took to them fairly quickly. When they were younger they liked the playtex sipsters with handles, now that they are bigger the love sippies with straws.

we started sippies when we started solids. they'd have the pureed food and then a sippy with water. ethan transitioned completely to sippies by 9 mo and anthony a bit after 12

eta...we started with First Years sippies b/c they don't have valves. we started with the smaller flower-shaped sippies that were easy to grasp and didn't require as much tilting, then went to regular sizes and then whatever cups were cheap! though it's hard to beat the FY prices!

thanks for all the replies. I think I'll look at sippies the next time I'm out shopping, and try formula in them once they seem to be able to hold it. they do hold toys, and once in a while will hold their bottle, but I'm not in any hurry to do the cup thing. I just think it'd be nice to have the cups on hand and washed for when I decide to try it. I'll let y'all know how it goes when we try. I'm thinking around 5ish months.

    thanks again!

I started my daughters on the Avent Magic Sippies with handles at around 5 months. They drank from them fine but you had to hold it for them up until about a month ago. I removed the handles and they started holding them all their own, and have had 2 cups a day, working on phasing the bottle out completely. I swtched to the Gerber Sip N Smile cups that are kinda tilted, and they love them!

Oh, and I always put formula in their cups, occassionally watered-down juice but pretty rarely. Good luck!
