When did you start cereal?

Discussion in 'The First Year' started by three_precious_girls, Jul 1, 2007.

I am going to the Dr tomorrow, but my Dr is very conservative and I only breastfed/formula fed my DD 1 for the first 6 mo. My older twin (A) is so hungry she wants to be fed every 2 1/2 hrs and eats like its her last meal. If the Dr still wants me to wait to supplement should I go ahead and give her cereal anyway? My "mommy" instinct is telling me she needs more to feel full....

Cereal in the bottle at 3 weeks due to reflux. Cereal off spoon 3 months.

Go with your Mommy instincts. My doc gave the go-ahead at 4 months to start cereal and I tried it but they just weren't ready for it, so I stopped until after 5 months. I again stopped and started and now they are doing just great with all solids.

I was just going through my baby book so I know exactly what I did. :) According to what I wrote down, I started spoon fed my girls rice cereal at 4 months. It sounds to me like she is ready for some cereal. Go with your mommy instincts, a pedi doesn't know everything about your baby, you know your baby better then anyone. :) HTH

My ds got cereal at 3 1/2 months per the pedi recommendation b/c he was downign 34 ounces a day. He had it for 1 month, then stopped wanting it, then started again at 5 months. My dd started wanting it at 5 months too. Every baby is different. I would definitely start now if she is wanting to eat every 2 1/2 hours!

4 months. Justin, my oldest, started at 3.5 months. Go with your instincts!

  8. Ok another silly question.... its not on the package and I have no memory what I did with DD, how much do you add to the bottle at first? Maybe I need a step by step guidance geeeeeeez! silly me!

I never put it in the bottle, just started with a really runny mixture fed via spoon then gradually thickened it up.

Go with your instincts, after all, you are the mom. I started mine with cereal at 5 months b/c DS didn't seem satisfied with just his bottles. He was much happier after I started cereal.

I tried adding cereal to the bottle, but it didn't help my babies. You could give it a try.

We started ours on solids at 5 months. But the first things we gave them were the stage 1 fruits. But then we intermixed the stage 1 fruits and the cereal. DD does not like the cereal but DS does. I thought about tryng the oatmeal cereal instead of the rice because she just gives me this face like...ah man ma, this stuff REALLY sucks!! I feel so bad! But DS is like, ok, food is food...I'll eat it. But he has always been my good eater! I am gonna try to give her more cereal and see if she gets used to it. I even mix it with some fruit but no real difference in her reaction. Good luck!

We started right before 6 months. I don't think mine were ready to start any earlier.

If you think they (or one) is ready, and they reached 4 months of age, I would go for it. At least try it, and if it works, great. If not, look for a plan B.

    Good luck!

4 months for us. Our pedi. suggested we do it in the bottle for James to help his reflux, but I, too felt Jonathan was more than ready for rice cereal - those 8 oz. bottles weren't enough! :D

We just started spoon feeding some cereal here and there in the past week or two (4mo). Piper loves it and gobbles it down with no problem. Payton isn't really interested and doesn't really know what to do with it once it's in her mouth.

They aren't super hungry babies but puke constantly.
