When did you start buying things?

I have yet to buy anything (well I did buy one pack of diapers) for the babies. I am just freaked that if I go hog wild and buy two of things, then maybe one won't make it.

So, when did or are others feeling comfortable enough to buy for both babies?

I will be 14 weeks on thursday and hopefully have a new ultrasound then. I am hoping I will see them both and feel better and then go shopping or something. I almost don't really feel pregnant (other then expanding belly), because I haven't bought anything yet.

i haven't bought anything yet. for quite a few reasons...

    1. my husband and i lost a lot of stuff due to Hurricane Katrina and we don't have our home remodeled yet.
    2. we don't know what we are having yet.
    3. we have people from our church that are giving us tons of stuff and we don't have any place to store any of it. Because of Katrina we are living in a FEMA trailer that is horrendously small even if it does sleep 7 people, it is really crowded with my husband and my daughter here.
    4. we are still waiting on our grant check to come in the mail so that we can remodel and that gives us what we need to do the twins room too.

so as you can see we are still waiting on our check and with no check no place for the stuff.
i will update to let everyone know when we get our check for the house. hopefully we will know what the twins are by then so we know what colors we will use for their room.

    lots of love!

I'd hold off on buying a lot of stuff just because you may get a shower and you'll want plenty of stuff for people to be able to buy you. I waited until 7 or 8 mos just because I didn't want the house to look like I was starting up a daycare really early on. I also held off buying anything at the store b/c I lucked out and got GREAT deals on craigslist or from friends for free. I don't have to worry about clothes much since these will be me 2nd and 3rd February boys. I think the first thing my husband and I bought was 2 teddy bears made my our son at build-a-bear when we found out they were boys. I am very insistent on being the first teddy bear buyer.

Before you buy tons of diapers, remember that some babies are allergic to certain brands. You might want to think of buying gift cards loaded with money for diapers instead if you are trying to do it as a way to ease the financial burden when they arrive.

  5. On my first DD we waited until we found out the gender then got cutsie things here and there. I held out on any big items until my shower. This time around I got a few things here and there that I figured I would really need and dont have (preemie clothes, formula, diapers) and held out until after the shower to see what I still needed. Turned out I just needed a mattress and bouncer. You never know! Plus you could change your mind. I thought for sure I would need 2 swings but now I am thinkin they can take turns! Ha.

As this is our fourth pregnancy and neither of our families every got us anything before, I doubt we will get a shower now either. Though I am expecting to get some cute outfits in the mail. That is all I know I will get from anyone. [IMG] It does sound kind of sad, but I am used to it. [IMG]

I bought one pack of diapers and had a panic attack. :lol I won't be buying anymore, except on an as needed basis for travel, etc. I have found a good deal on cloth diapers and am just waiting until we are further along to buy them.

I am just kind of wanting to get things and still nervous about getting them.

Aurie, we were lucky enough to get money from DH's coworkers (all male- which is pretty good they even thought to do anything since men are generally not the baby-shower planning type) and my coworkers with my son threw me a surprise shower. We didn't get a ton of stuff, but it was all really appreciated. As far as family, I think the only thing we have ever gotten from my husband's family is clothing and the occasional blanket. They do get my son toys now that he is older. My family did monogrammed blankies/diaper bag. No huge gear, but my sister did give me what little she had left from her 3 kids. Anyway, I know where you are coming from. Craigslist has been our saving grace financially. We have gotten stuff from twin and triplet moms that was affordable and even matches if that is important to you.

I started shopping the very day I found out I was Pregnant!!I could not wait!!! I just bought things like diapers and things that were REALLY on sale - then when I found out that I was having 2 girls -
    OH MAN I shopped!!!

shop while you can!! when you get further along it may be too uncomfortable!

I think stuff that matches is cute, but the babies don't remember. So, it really isn't all that important to me. I did see lots of Winnie the Pooh stuff at Walmart. I might just go with that if I get new things. They are really cute (car seat, pack n play, high chair, etc all with the same material). And Pooh is gender neutral too, plus he is all Zen-like [IMG]

I started buying things once we found out the sexes at 14 weeks. I think I bought one soft Carter's toy before that, but everything else we waited on. THEN we went hogwild. I bought a bunch of boy/girl matching outfits at the Gap because they were on sale. But it did not occur to me that my babies would NOT be wearing matching outfits...they would be wearing jammies wrapped in a swaddle blanket 24/7. It was still fun though and I would not have changed a thing! I had so much fun preparing for their arrival.

Even if you are uncomfortable buying clothes, etc..... buy DIAPERS!!
We did this with our singleton & twins pregnancies & were so greatful later on.

I registered awhile ago - mostly to make myself a running list of the things I wanted to make sure I got. But I didn't actually start shopping until I found out the genders last week. Then I had a weekend that would make AmEx proud! Ok, so I reasoned that I couldn't pick out paint colors unless I had the furniture picked out and the bedding in my house : ) I'll have a shower in 2 months, and I know I will get some stuff I've registered for then, but some things on my list are pretty expensive (ie, the jogging stroller), and I wouldn't expect anyone to get that for us. So I went ahead and bought that too. I just want to make sure I got some stuff together before I got truly uncomfortable and I also wanted to buy stuff periodically, as opposed to having a gigantic BRU trip right before the babies are born.

We registered at 18 weeks thinking there was only one baby then we adjusted the registry at 19 weeks when we found out there were two. I like the one package of diapers a week idea, just be sure to tape the receipt to the package in case that brand/size doesn't work for you.

Honestly I never felt comfortable buying for two, I was not going to believe it until I held them both but there comes a point when you just have to do it or you will not have anything when they arrive.

Glad I'm not the only one!

The first thing I bought was a diaper bag at about 28 weeks...then I had a suprise shower at 29 weeks and got some stuff. I've been getting lots of gifts since then, here and there. I've been on bedrest since October, but I did send DH and my MIL on a shopping spree once we had a scare at about 30 weeks and thought they might be here sooner than we thought. We still have no nursery furniture and I haven't allowed my DH to actually open any of the big stuff..it's sitting in the nursery with the door shut. I'm so paranoid, what can I say!

My advice would be to buy alot of your baby gear early on, around the time you find out their sex. I think anywhere from 16 to 19 weeks is a great time. By the time you get to the high 20's - 27, 28, 29, you have a much harder time being on your feet. It then gets to the point that shopping isn't fun but rather a chore. I'm finished with my shopping at this point unless I browse online. I don't have enough energy and a lot of twin mom's are like me and on modified bedrest by this point. We bought their cribs, their bedding, changing table, bouncers and swings from BRU. We bought their carseats and double stroller from tinyrides.com.I bought their clothing whenever I saw something I liked and it just added up. Also, I went to Sam's Club and bought their wet wipes and diapers. It's alot cheaper.I think it's good to start buying in your second trimester.

I started buying things immediately. I bought a little lamb that winds up with a pink bow on it, prior to me being pg this time. Now I am having two girls. I did the same thing with DS, I found a really cute powder blue Ralph Lauren outfit (prior to being pg) and low and behold it was a boy!

After having two baby showers, I have to say that I personally got
a lot of clothing rather than things on my registry. I had a feeling my shower would turn out that way so I went ahead and bought as much as I could as I found things on SUPER sale. I went to craigslist and ebay and got so much like 2 Arm's Reach Cosleepers ($75 each), a black sable Peg Perego Duette($200), Bumbo seat ($20), diapers and barnd new Playtex Premium Nurser bottles with NIP liners (really cheap) and 11 baby girl gowns ($10), Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Infant Seats ($65 each), 2 Sleigh crib ($20 & $50) (I refinished them in black), etc. With DS I bought everything new but didn't save it because we weren't originally going to have more than one, then we decided to have another and now one became twins!! Also I wouldn't waste the money on a crib set if you want to save money. Bumpers and comforters are suffocation hazards so that just leaves you with a crib sheet and crib skirt. I bought my fitted sheets (white cotton flannel) for $10 each and then made my crib skirt since I couldn't buy the one I wanted separately. I bought two of the accessories from the nursery set (lamp shade/lamp & diaper stacker) You can do a lot without spending a lot. I can post pics if you want of the nursery. I recd a lot of compliments on it which feels great since I didn't spend much at all compared to what mom's spend on just one baby's nursery.

We registered at about 21 weeks...after we found out the genders. As for buying things we were going to wait but we bought the cribs early because we found a GREAT deal on EBAY. We also bought a few outfits but we are pretty much holding out for the shower. I will be 31 weeks at that point. My mom has actually been buying diapers and books. Every time she goes food shopping she gets diapers and every time she goes to the book store (which is often) she buys a book for them. One can never have too many of either right? [IMG]

I didn't buy anything until after my shower. I don't know why buy I just couldn't do it. I don't know if I felt like I was going jinx myself but I would see something and love it but couldn't bring myself to buy it. My shower was in Feb. and I gave birth in April. After the shower, I went and bought all the stuff I really needed that I didn't get at the shower. I felt more comfortable after having a house full of stuff already.
