when did you really start using regular cups?

I think they're actually doing fairly well with real cups.....as long as they're thirsty. I've been giving them a tiny bit at a time during lunch & if they're thirsty they drink it pretty well. If not, it gets dumped all over the table.

But I seem to be having a Sippy shortage.....whoever has all the socks has now moved on to stealing sippy cups, too......and I'm debating getting some more, or are they too close to moving on to regular cups? I really don't feel comfortable with the regular cups yet to be anywhere but the kitchen table.

I am not sure, but I know that we aren't anywhere near being ready. I would say buy a couple.

If I was home all the time vs sending my kids to the sitter, I'd have regular cups only. BUT that being said, they're still using sippy cups. My time limit is 4 years old. They will be done by then (only 3 more months! LOL)

If you want them to only use cups, then do it. If you notice that one is starting to pour it out, grab it and put it away from the table until it's asked for.

To tell you the truth, only just around the time they turned 3 years old. Now I only give them open cups for meals. And they only have their straw cups for their morning Ovaltine (which they drink watching TV in my bed, so...) and for the car and trips.

I didn't start using normal cups until after they were 3. Alyssa and Bryony I started a few months after they turned three, Naomi and Luke were just past 3 1/2 when I switched them. I like to have a drink out where they can reach it all day so I wanted to be really sure they had the hang of drinking well (not spilling) and putting the drink back on the table before I gave them 'big' cups.

Have you tried asking them where the sippy cups are? If they hid them they should be able to find them. Otherwise I'd buy some more. They're much more convenient for going out as well.

I will give them open cups with water in them because I don't care when it hits the floor (and it does). They use cups with lids and straws but no sippy cups for everything else. We started this about 2 months ago when I tossed all of the sippy cups.

Mine start daycare 3 days a week and she said they try to give them regular cups with their meals/snacks. I'm a little nervous about that, since they only get sippies at home and I suspect it will be messy at first. I'll be sure to send extra clothes.

I'd probably wait until around 3 myself, but if they get the hang of it at school then I'll do it at home to keep things consistent.

My girls use regular cups for snack in school twice a week. I also do them at home sometimes but only at the table for dinner. Alexandra is pretty good at using it and gets the idea. Paige on the other hand likes to stick her tongue in the cup and that is probably the reason she comes home from school in her change of clothes often but not everyday she is there now.

This is how I feel. If they get open cups, they are outside, sitting in their high chairs, or they have to sit on the ground (we have tile inside). Most of the time it is sippies. They do pretty well but definitely there is spillage. Do you want to know how my kids learned how to drink out of cups? Drinking the tub water with their stacking cups while bathing!!!

Oh goodness...at their age...I would definitely buy at least 2 more sippy cups! While I think its important to get them used to drinking out of a cup. A sippy cup still has a role. Mainly, giving you some peace of mind in letting them drink in other spots other than the kitchen table.

We started using cups close to age 2...only at the kitchen table or outside. I found after age 3yrs, much more control and less spills consistently. We had many spills during their 2's....its just a given. They are clumsy of their surroundings. They turn to grap a napkin, look out the window, etc. and knock their cup over (stuff like that).

The boys just turned 4yrs and I still have closed containers (sippy straw thermos) around here. I see nothing wrong about that. DH and I often drink water from a water bottle...so why shouldn't they. They are allowed to use the bottles in the playroom and familyroom at their little tables. Open cups and juice boxes are only allowed in the kitchen and outside. It will be a LONG time (if ever) that I'll let them sit on the couch with a cup of grape juice.

My oldest stayed with sippy cups until he was three!! I don't trust kids with open air cups and walking around, so at dinner they get sips of juice in a cup.

we always have meals and snacks at the kitchen table. I usually give a sippy or straw cup with meals. sometimes we will have an open cup with one handle on the side or a "juice glass" at breakfast or at dinner. I have progressively been working on more open cup time since they turned 2.5

if your sippies are vanishing, I would buy some more. they are great for the car-- if nothing else... My girls won't be "spill free" at the table for a long time yet.

We do sippy cups for the most part, but I let them practice using regular cups about once a day. I put water in them. They also have small cups in the tub with them.

I was concerned about that too so I started getting them on straws...so now they use the toddler sippy cups with built in straws..so now I don't have to worry about when we are out if they have their sippy cup..they can just drink from those kids drinks with straws that they get out. I'm not going to worry about open cups for a while

Around 3, and we started with water only. Once they got to where they weren't spilling, we moved on to real drinks, but only at the table. They are only allowed to drink water in other parts of the house, even now. (This, however, is true of my older kids, too. People who don't clean the carpet don't get to drink stuff that stains in carpeted areas. ;))

We started phasing sippies out many months ago (they hate them anyway) and are almost exclusively on open cups now. The only time they get anything other than water is mealtimes when they're sitting to eat and they don't spill then. I'm just using regular, plastic cups for them. It really simplifies things not having to wash and keep track of a bunch of special cups.

My two year old uses a cup at all meals and snacks (at the kitchen table) and has been for some time. That said, I would still get some more sippies. Sippies are good for on the go when you are out and about or if you want to let them have a drink of water away from the table or high chairs. I only give water in sippies because she uses them in our family room and I think they are all prone to leaking at times and I HATE HATE HATE stained carpet. Anyway, I would definately invest in a few more sippies or straw cups for on the go and in the car!
