When did you put a blanket to "cover up" with in their cribs?

After reading the "what is in their cribs" thread, I got to wondering this...

Right now mine each have a lovey (small blankey with an animal head on it) and a glow worm in their cribs. They love blankets - and I'm just not sure when it is "okay" for them to have a larger blanket in the crib. I would cover them up with it, but I am not sure that it would stay on them. Is there a certain age when this is "safe"? For some reason, I can't remember when I gave my older DS a blanket like this. But were were in AZ and it was never cold there - so I didn't really worry about covering him up.

    Thanks!

I started with small blankets they couldn't get tangled in. I think that was right around 7-8 months? Maybe a little sooner. (Which is probably not recommended.) I just made sure they were able to move around on their own. They were both crawling.

Now the blankets are bigger, but they are still baby blankets.

I think it is after 12 months that it is technically OK to put a blanket in their cribs, but I know with mine, they roll around so much at night, it hardly seems to make sense to "cover" them. We use sleep sacks still, which I love, and it acts like a blanket that rolls with them. Eventually we will switch to blankets, but not quite yet ( my boys are 16 months).

Mine have had quilts (made by their auntie) in their cribs since they were 1, but they still just sleep on top of them. One of my DDs will occasionally ask to be covered up at bedtime, but she never stays that way for long. Still, I think it is pretty safe starting at about 12 months, as long as the blanket isn't so big that they could get really tangled up in it.

For warmth, we still use sleep sacks. I just got them the ones with foot holes in a size 4-5T (they're huge!), so we can keep using sleep sacks as long as necessary, until the girls decide to sleep under the blankets instead.

My older son was at least 3 before we started using blankets -- mostly b/c he's such an active sleeper more than anything else. Used sleep sacks with him (and plan to with the girls) for as long as we could. Both for warmth, and b/c they were part of our routine -- the sleep sack definitely signals "sleep" since it's only worn at naps and night time.

Around 9-10 months we used receiving blankets to cover them up. They still use small flannel receiving blankets.

I think it is safe for them now. But for mine, they wont keep them on. They are still all over the place in their cribs. So, MichelleL posted a product called Blankease a few months ago and I ordered them. They are awesome. When it's chilly which it is now down here in FL I put them in footed pj's and then put the Blankease on over them. The boys love them and when they arent wearing them, Tyler keeps them both in his crib next to him.

I just gave Cody one at 18 months. We took away his paci so it was kind of a trade.

We did around 10 months when they started wearing pajamas without feet. I had a horrible time finding 12m footed sleepers (that didn't cost a fortune). Now they sleep with them every night. I sneak in and cover them back up when I go to bed.

Thanks for this link - that looks great! My older DS HATED his Sleepsack - so I hadn't even attempted to put these 2 in them (except for last winter when they were really young) - but this looks like it is something they would like b/c it has legs in it!

Thanks again - I'm going to order some.

about 6 months but it was more for comfort than warmth - DD had a hell of a time STTN and once we gave her a blanket (crocheted with large holes) it was like something clicked and she started sleeping!

All of mine had blankets from day one. From when they got mobile until close to 3, they didn't stay under them so I dressed them warmly and they usually slept on top of the blanket. Now (finally!) they all sleep under covers on their beds I don't worry about them staying warm anymore.

Mine are still in sleep sacks. No way they would keep a blanket over them at this point yet.

Once they started to crawl, so around 8 months. I thought it was ok, but then one night I went in just to check and my DD's head was completely wrapped up in her blanket (it was SO sad...she was sweating, etc.). I then took them away for another couple of months, and gave them back at about 10 months. No problems since, though they don't really keep them on - they mostly just use them as lovies.

    Day 1.

Not as much if they were swaddled, but any other time. And we stopped swaddling Aiden at 1 mo, so he's been covered since that time.

They don't always keep them on, so then I just throw another blanket on top of them. I hate the thought of them cold & I can't even FATHOM the thought of sleeping without a blanket myself (even in 100 degree weather), so they always get a blanket too :)!
