When did you introduce real cups?

When did you start letting your kids use cups with no lids to drink? Ours like the novelty of it, but end up spilling it on themselves or on the floor.

Mine have started getting exposed to it during snack time at their little toddler class they take on Friday mornings. So I let them try it there since all the other kids (ages 2-3) are also doing it. Some are better than others, but based on the kids in this class about 5 out of the 10 kids do it well. So I am making a better effort to let them try at home, but literally put very small amounts of water or milk in the cup.

Our OT thinks you should introduce it now- not for successful drinking but for starting of control and wrist movement.

I've been introducing cups for about 4 months now. I only put a little bit of water or milk in it, enough for them to get a drink, but not soak themselves. They do very well, however, I don't plan on letting them go solo any time soon.

We do real cup practice. I've been letting them sip for a few months. Like PP, only a little sip. They like it and at every dinner want some of what we are drinking. I think they still have a ways to go on control, but for the most part, have figured it out. But they are far away from getting a cup with more than a sip.

We just started giving them about a half inch of water in a cup with dinner just so they can practice. Braeden does pretty good but Kaia, well, let's just say it's a good thing their bibs have pockets!

With Alyssa and Bryony I switched them to real cups a month or two after their 3rd birthday (can't remember exactly). Before that they had had occasional drinks from open cups, so I knew they had the skill to do it. They didn't seem to care about the change at all.
I haven't switched Naomi and Luke yet, I will probably wait until the summer. They do very well with real cups if they have a straw, they can hold the cup steady so it doesn't spill.

Around 2 or maybe even earlier. Only in thier booster chair at meal times. I got great cups at Ikea they are perfect for toddler hands and so very cheap if you have an Ikea anywhere near you.

We started at about 18 mo, but I don't do it consistantly... so they haven't been getting better. They like to drink out of cups, but they end up completely wet. I guess I'll start doing it more, though. [IMG]
