When did you introduce peanut butter?

My ped. is adament against introducing PB until they're 2. This is so frustrating to me because how easy is it to whip up a PB&J sandwhich and I know they'll love it. My nanny told me that they gobbled up her sandwhich yesterday (not knowing) and of course they are fine. I know many kids try PB at one. Just wondering.

Mine had it at 11 months or so. By accident. We went to a friends house, and the older kids were eating PB&J, and had left their sandwiches. All the sudden we looked up to see the boys gobbling them down. At that point, all we could do was watch for a reaction, and they were fine. They also had honey nut cheerios at 9 months, because my parents didn't know that it wasn't allowed. Fortunately, no food allergies here.

B/c we have no serious family food allergies our ped gave us the go-ahead at our 12 mo wcc. We tried it at 13 months. It's a huge hit and no reaction.

FWIW, re: honey, our ped said not to put honey on anything and serve it to them, but that honey-flavored cheerios, graham crackers, etc. were ok.

Our ped did tell us ABSOLUTELY NO DAIRY until 12 months though, which really annoyed me b/c that ruled out yogurt, cheese, etc. As a first time parent (especially with preemies) I was really by-the-book about what doctors said. Now I feel like I've come into my own more on when to listen to the doctor and when to take what they say as a "recommendation" and make my own decision.

Like the PP, since we didn't have any alergies in the family our ped told us peanut butter at one year was fine. Do you guys have alergies? What is the reason your doc wants you to wait until 2?

Like others, since there are no allergies to peanuts (or anything) on either side of the family, my Pedi gave the go ahead for peanut butter after they were a year old.

Nope, no allergies what so ever! I think she's just overly cautious!

Our family has had no food allergies, so our pedi gave us the go ahead fairly early, I can't remember exactly. I do remember at 13 months when they would rip apart the crackers and lick the peanut butter out of them.

The boys accidently got Nicholas' PB crackers before they were two. Aaron was fine but Jaden had a reaction. We are still holding off for a little while.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting until they are three but I've never met anyone who waited that long. Our guys were over the age of two when we accidently gave them a dessert with peanut butter chips in it (we did that ourselves so we can't blame anyone). The boys were fine so I tried real peanut butter about a week later. Ben hates it but Adam likes it every now and then. He doesn't gobble it down, though.

We have no family allergies either. But our ped has said 2. I think they are being more cautious now with all the peanut allergies out there because with my oldest DD we got the go ahead at 15 months.

DH has nut allergies. He's OK with peanuts and peacans, but most others will close up his throat. I have been told 3 years old too so we'll probably wait since the boys may have inherited the allergy.

My pediatrician also said 2 years old, but my boys accidentally tried it last week while eating cookies at a friends house. Just today I tried peanut butter sandwiches since there was no previous reaction and neither were even interested!

Pedi told us to wait until they were 2, but we have no allergies in the family and I am often tempted to try PB&J for a change of pace...havent' done it yet. We have our 15 month WV on 7/17, I may ask about it again.

We waited until almost 2 to try PB. We don't have any food allergies in our family so I figured it was safe to try. Until that time, we used almond butter instead of PB, and they like that too. I think I missed giving them PB more that they did trying it.

Our boys had it around a year. They didn't have a reaction, so I figured it was fine to give them. Now they have PB toast almost every morning.

We started at a year old when we started eating finger foods and "real food". We had no problem - i just do a light layer so that it's not too sticky and we LOVE  them. Infact, Landon reaches onto his brothers tray to get the food. I didnt ask my Dr. Because he hasnt helped me out in the past anyways - i have done it on my own pretty much....we started milk at 7 months so.....

My ped told us to wait until 18 months. We just started giving them PB a couple of weeks ago--they love it!

My ped said two years. I made the decision to try to hold off until three. I have tons of allergies (no food ones though) and don't want to take any chances. My aunt did give Rachel a nutterbutter a couple of months back by accident and she was fine so I think they will be okay with the PB, but I still hesitate. My allergist wouldn't allow me to have any nuts while pregnant and breastfeeding as well. She said the longer they were not exposed, the better they would be. I hated it though because I love PB and I have the feeling they will be fans as well. Just another six months...

We just did at 13 months......our pedi was more concerned with a choking hazard b/c it's soooooo sticky - so we mix it up with applesauce and the boys love it in a PB&J!

Our ped said age 3! But then the nurse told me (on a separate occasion) "The guidelines now say age 3 -- but you can try it earlier if you have no family history of severe allergies." So we started being more relaxed about nuts around 18 months. I still haven't actually given them peanut butter (just because we don't tend to have it in the house), but the girls have each had bites of my PowerBar (with peanuts in it), pieces of coffee cake with nuts, etc. I will still watch them closely the first time they really eat something with a lot of nuts/peanuts in it, but I'm pretty sure they're OK with it.

One thing my ped did say is, don't assume they are OK with it just because they don't react the first time. Sometimes it takes several exposures to trigger an allergy. So he said to give them a tiny amount one morning (so you can watch them closely all day), then a tiny amount the next morning, and so on for a few days. After a few days, try giving them a little more. If they still don't react, you can give them a "normal" amount, and if they STILL don't react, you can conclude they're OK with it.

The girls haven't had it yet...I'm a scaredy cat! Their Ped. said that they could have it starting at 12 months if we wanted to, even though AAP recommends 3. I am just scared of that particular allergy!

Gabe just recently had a PB&J sandwich, but he is REALLY picky anyway. He asked for it one day, tried it and liked it. That's odd for him!

I've heard the statement before that it takes more than one exposure for a reaction to show up as well. Did any of you do the "smear" test? where ya smear some on their arms and wait to see if there's a reaction? I was wondering if that is a good way to start?
