when did you give up your swings for naps?

I try to get my little ones in their cribs for most naps -- and depending on how the day goes i may put them in their swing for a nap. They tend to nap MUCH longer in their swings compared to their cribs. Sometimes they nap well in their cribs, sometimes not. I know I should be more consistent....but I don't like dealing with fussy babies when I'm on my own a lot of the time.

So - when did you give up your swings for naps? I'm sure I should be doing this soon...but it's hard for me to do.

I think we were totally done with swings by the time the girls were 6 months old.

Mine are still napping in them. i have one sleep in their crib and the other in a swing in another room because when they sleep in the same room for naps they wake each other up. They are now getting to big for them so in the next week I will be buying a playpen to use instead.

I'm just curious, why do you think napping in a swing is wrong?

    Around 6 months here also.

I don't think it's wrong per se, it's just that they won't be able to sleep in there all their life so they need to be transitioned at some point.

In my case the boys used to nap real good in the swings, then at about 6 months that changed. They would only nap good in their room/crib away from all the action! my DS alex, I call him my party animal because he never wants to sleep and miss one thing! :D

It seems like a natural progression to me... if they don't fit - y'all move on. My question was more of the (trying to be delicate) why do you care?

We went from swings and bouncy seats, to porta cribs and PNPs, to soon to be real cribs... I never really worried about sleeping locals (and I do have a teenager who sleeps in his own bed just in case anyone is worried!!). What is the rush or the "plan"... I'm just confused... I promise your babies will let you know when they are ready to change...

Just want to make sure they will learn to self soothe themselves to sleep. DS can do so, but DD needs cuddled and rocked by me first (even if she's gonig into a swing). I don't mind doing it though (but it's a bad habit) because she will be little once.

Just for the record -- I have not gotten a shower yet today or changed out of my PJs -- LOL!!!!!

I say do whatever it takes to get those naps in! In the last 2 weeks we had to stop putting them in their swings. Joshua can now get out of ANY straps. That includes both car seats and the high chair 5 point harnesses. We used to put them in their car seats in the morning right after they woke up with a movie and milk. I gave me a little while longer, because they wake so early. They used to fall back to sleep. I also used the swing sometimes in the afternoon if they just didn't want to go down. It always worked. I do have to say that we had the Graco Snuglider. The swingframe that used the infant car seats. They still meet the weight requirements, but are longer. So we only use them in the swing and not the car.
They made it in those swings until almost 20 months!! They made the transition to their cribs for napping without many problems. Use them as long as possible, IMO. :)

I have the boys sleep in their swings for naps, as well as the basinette. They'll sleep in the bouncy seat but not as well, fussy and crying more. Just wondering if anyone knows if it's a good idea to switch it up (bouncy seat, swing, PNP, crib, etc) or to keep a routine on where they nap?

I am just now trying to give up the swing. I'm getting tired of everytime we go somewhere the girls fall asleep but as soon as we get home and there is no movement they wake themselves up. I think that has to do with the swings. They are used to swinging while asleep and as soon as the swing is turned off they wake up so what does that tell ya.

Between 6 and 7 months. By 8 months they were done with swings completely and I packed them up.

Hillarious! This is my life!! I am at home by myself with the babies (who will be 3 months next week) and a 3 year old. . .Thankfully my 3 year old still takes a short nap in the afternoon, so that's when I get to choose to eat lunch or take a shower! I just try most days to at least get dressed by the time DH is home from work but its tough some days! LOL

We were definitely done with the swings by 5 to 6 months. I remember how I loved them though, they slept so well in them!

My boys were about 6 months when they stopped sleeping in their swings. They sleep in them not only for naps but also during the night. I stopped them from sleeping in them all night long when they were about 4-5 months old b/c my one son developed torta collis ( sp) where when he was sleepin in them his neck would always turn to the side and his neck muscles started to grow uneven....now we are goign to physical theropy once a week to streach that out. So I guess just becareful that their necks and heads are straight while they are sleeping in the swings and bouncers!!! PT with a 10 month old is not fun!!!

I never used the swings for naps from the get go. My peds recommended against letting the babies get soothed by motion or else I was going to have to always soothe them that way. . . Honestly, it was just as hard upfront to not let the swing help with this as it would be to break the habit now. But I'm still glad we're not dealing with it. It's nice to lay the babies, awake but drowsy, in their bassinettes knowing they will fall asleep on their own.

as far as I know, it's not "wrong" when they nap in swings, it's just that it's not the same kind of rest/sleep than in crib because it's not motionless sleep, which they would get in crib.

our girl never really need the help of the swing, she's a born great napper and nightsleeper as well.

our boy used to take at least one nap a day in a craddle swing, not from the beginning, but when he would wake up and would not be able to soothe himself back to sleep, I would put him in swing to prolong nap.

thankfully this is not the case anymore, very rare, like right now because he's sick and has a stuffy nose, he naps a bit in the swing, it helps because the upright position won't get his nose all clogged up.

I had them nap in their cribs from the very beginning, in same crib until 3 months, then (we are lucky enough) they got their own rooms which I think increased their sleep quality extremely...

I guess the motion that the baby loves so much from a swing or car ride isn't as beneficial to them as it is to us (since much of us are sleep deprived and we'll take anything we can get  ). It doesn't really provide 'quality sleep' for them and of course, you don't want it to become a habit. I would honestly break free from the swing in a napping perspective and try to just put them down drowsy but awake in their crib/playpen. You don't want to associate napping time with such things like a swing as it'll be hard to transition.. good luck! - Ohh.. and 7 months here!

I guess I'm in the minority here...I'm still using our swing sometimes for a nap...not like I did in the beginning but some days it's still my savior with one baby or the other...
