When did you find out?

One question that I get asked most often is "Did you know you were having twins?" Is it really common to NOT know that you are having twins before you go in for delivery?
Because I knew when I got pregnant there was no debate about how far along I was, so I didn't get an u/s right away. Around this area it is not common to do a routine u/s at 20 weeks. So, I didn't know I was having twins until I was 27 weeks when I went and got an u/s done on my own. But I FELT that I was having twins.
So, my question to you all is when did you find out? How did you find out? Did you have a routine u/s? Did your OB/GYN suspect you were having twins? Did you suspect you were having twins? Share your stories please.
I know this has kind of been discussed before, and I'm sorry for the repeat but I'm curious.

You know I get that reaction A LOT!! :D

  5. I found out at about 6 weeks because I was in extreme pain and had gone to the ER. I had a dream around the moment of conception that I had twins, but I had brushed it off...I was so shocked when I found out!!!

We found out at 12 weeks. My doc does the Nuchal Translucency test (u/s and bloodwork) to test for Down's between weeks 11 and 13 and that's when we found out. I had no clue! It was really a good thing that I was lying down (and that DH was there with me :p ).

We found out at our 1st U/S at 8 weeks. We knew that there was a chance because I was on Clomid but didn't really think that it would happen. I mean a 5% increase in your chances when there have NEVER been twins in your family does NOT seem like a lot!! On the way to our appt my DH was joking saying I hope it's twins - I kept telling him that it wasn't funny and that if it was he was getting snipped!

Anyway - We all saw two little beans the second that she put the thing on my tummy. I freaked out! My DH was excited and I was scared to death. It took about 2 weeks for us to get used to the idea. I would randomly start crying trying to figure out how we were going to take care of two babies at once!

Now, a little over a year after finding out we were having 2 I can't imagine it being any different!

We were lucky to find out so early - it gave us lots of time to prepare - I can't imagine not finding out till 27 weeks!

21 weeks for us. We had an U/S at 11 weeks that showed only 1 baby. SO at 21 weeks to find out sex we were quite suprised. I should have suspected something was up when I needed maternity clothes at like 10 weeks.

Oh my gosh! 27 weeks! II found out at 7 weeks at our first ultrasound and needed the whole pregnancy to get used to the idea! As soon as the tech put the camera-thing on my tummy, two little sacks showed up on the screen, but of course, I didn't know what I was looking at. She immediately asked us if we had been taking any fertility drugs. We said "noooo, why?" I was scared something was wrong developmentally with the baby or something! She laughed, turned to my husband and said, "You're going to want to sit down for this. You're having twins!" We both started cracking up laughing!

The irony is the week before the ultrasound, my husband and I were remarking on my growing belly - looking like I was showing really early. My husband casually joked about how funny it would be if we were having twins. Other than that, the possiblity never crossed my mind!!!

I did IVF, so I found out at my first u/s, which was 6 weeks. Hanging around on TTC websites for a few years, I'd seen a lot of ultrasound photos, so I knew immediately what I was looking at.

I can't imagine 27 weeks (or even 21) -- I was so big by 14 weeks that my BOSS asked me if I was having more than one. :icon_eek: (I had to tell my office I was preggers at 10 weeks because it was becoming obvious -- when she asked me that, I went ahead and fessed up to twins. It helped explain why I was eating 5 meals during the workday.)

I found out at 12 weeks. All my friends at work thought I was growing quickly and was having twins, but when I first went to the doctor, he thought I was only about 8 or 9 weeks along. I asked if we could get an ultrasound just to be sure. Well, scheduled the ultrasound for the next week and it turned out I was 12 weeks along and there were 2 babies in there! I actually started laughing because I had thought there was a possibility, just because I felt like I might be having twins, but then didn't really think so any more when the doctor told me it wasn't likely. Guess he was wrong!

Same here. We were in shock. I immediately started crying and didn't stop for about a week. My vision of what our life would be like with our single baby was shattered, and I had no idea how we were going to handle 2. Of course, now I wouldn't change a thing -- except, of course, the double night waking :)

Ihad bleeding at 8 weeks, and thought that I lost the baby. So I went in for an ultrasound, to see about the bleeding. and that when we saw 2. We did do IVF, and they put 2 embryos in, I guess they both stuck.

During the first and second trimester I didn't measure large at all and there were no symptoms except the never ending nausea, so there wasn't a reason to suspect I was having more than one. I found out at a routine 16 week ultrasound and I was in total shock. I think I asked the ultrasound tech if she was ABSOLUTELY SURE about 5 times!!

6 1/2 weeks here also - we did inj/IUI so it wasn't a total shock (it was more of a relief since I'd had 5 dominant follies)

We went through IVF...so I knew at 6 weeks they were twins. Never a surprise to us since we had such close monitoring through the whole procedure.

Well let me start at the beginning. I took a test, it came out positive, I had a blood test that day and it was negative. I took a few more tests over the weekend, then called again for another blood test, so this time it came positive. Because I was high risk and my care had to be transfered to a peri, so at 8 weeks I went for my first sono to verify a hb. Dh asked ds how many babies, he said 3...well he wasnt far off  . So my doc does the sono and we saw one baby  Two weeks later at 10 weeks I had a sono at the peri's...imagine the surprise of their being two this time  Dh kept asking if they were sure there wasnt another.

I had an idea that I was carrying more than one. I started wearing maternity at 5 or 6 weeks, I tried to tell myself that it was just because I had just had a c-section with Kaitlyn a 4 months prior. Then I was visiting my mom and I kid you not, every episode that entire week of Baby Story and Special Delivery was multiples. I told dh and he just laughed. Guess that was a sign to help me get used to the idea :)

We found out at the routine 18 week U/S. I jokingly told the tech that as long as there was only one things were just fine. She looked at me with a very puzzled expression and said "You want me to tell you?" I replied yes not thinking about anything and she said "there are two". Your kidding was the only thing I could say for the next 5 mins - she finally turned the screen around and pointed out head 1 and head 2. I'm not sure who was more surprised - me not knowing or her that I didn't know. I also didn't measure any bigger with this pregnancy and my Dr. never thought to look for more than 1 heartbeat!
It was a shock enough - I can't imagine finding out at 27 weeks!

I had to have an early ultrasound (7 weeks) because I had an early miscarriage 5 months before I got pregnant w/the girls (my only other pregnancy), so they wanted to make sure it was a viable pregnancy. We were looking at the screen when a little box popped up asking the tech to confirm multiple gestations. I looked at that and I'm like, "I'm having twins, aren't I?" My husband about passed out! LoL...

Let's see... I knew I was pregnant at 2 weeks (my period was supposed to come right around the time they were conceived and it never came...) and by 5 weeks I was so sick I could barely move. My OB did an ultrasound and said with a huge grin "Ohhh.... so that's the problem!"

I also did IVF and had two embryos transferred. We went in for our 6 week u/s and was told we had two sacs, with nothing in them. We were devastated to say the least. We went back a week later as a follow-up and to talk about round 2 and SURPRISE - there were two heartbeats. Talk about a roller coaster ride. So, 7 weeks for us.

I found out at 8 weeks at my routine 8 week check up and u/s. We'd had an U/S at about 5 weeks and saw 1 gestational sack. The doc had me come in 3 weeks later for another to ensure that things were progressing properly. That's when there were 2 heartbeats. The idea of twins had never crossed my mind. Talk about a shock!

U/S at 7 weeks 3 days.... I had some heavy spotting/light bleeding and was feeling pretty bad. I went to the hospital because I thought I was miscarrying. They did an u/s to see if the pregnancy was eptopic or not and there were 2 little bubbles with beans in them. It was about 3am and I was sooo tired, I asked the tech if the baby was ok and she said yes so I stopped worrying. She kept measuring and measuring (and measuring) all the while she was asking questions like "How would you feel about having twins?" "How big is your house?" etc etc. I was pretty dense and didn't suspect twins until she turned around the monitor and said "I know why you feel so bad, you're having twins!" I found TS around 14 weeks... I'm so glad my boys brought me here.

I found out at my first ob visit at 8 weeks. I was sooooo sick. Morning sickness hit around 2 am one night and didn't stop :bad: I own a cafe and was often at work at 5:30 am. At that time of day, most of our customers are either farmers/ranchers or oilfield guys. Several of them said that I was having twins. Mostly because I was so sick.

A few days before my ob visit I bought some capris a couple of sizes bigger than what I had been wearing. Tried them on at the store and they fit, two days later I couldn't get them buttoned. I have always had a weight issue, but thought there was NO WAY I could have gained that much weight because I was too busy puking! When I told my dr. about it, he said not to worry, that sometimes happens. Then I went down the hall to the u/s. I was telling the tech about the guys at the cafe saying I was going to have twins. She said, "well, there's one heartbeat" as she turned up the sound. "Thank God there is only one!" "I didn't say there was only one. There's the second heartbeat." She was using a vaginal probe, but said she couldn't get a picture of both that way. When she put the other probe on my belly, there were two little circles clear as day. I nearly fell off that table!

I was by myself at this appointment. I do not recommend that anyone ever go alone to their first ob appointment. I was in shock and could barely walk out to the parking lot! I'm still in shock nearly 15 months later and can't believe there are 2 babies running around my house!

I did three tests first one negative, second one inconclusive and third positive. My friend said the only other person she knew that had an inconclusive pregnancy test had twins and i was like oh shut up!! I should have really thought about it as twins run in my family but it didnt once cross my mind!! Found out it was twins at my first U/S @ 12 weeks. x

We found out at 5 1/2 weeks about the twins. I was very lucky to have worked in a RE office, so the sono tech was always wanting to scan me. To our utter shock, twins!! :yahoo: The best news ever. I cried and laughed at the same time. So, after the initial scan, I think I was scanned twice a week up until 24 weeks when I was admitted to the hospital.

We found out at 7 weeks. I went in first first prenatal appt at 6 weeks and I was measuring large so she sent me in for a U/S. I basically knew then that it was twins, and the U/S just confirmed it.

We did Clomid/IUI, and I had three good follies.....so I guess we should have suspected, but honestly, we didn't think it was going to work at all, based on the odds the RE gave us.

I should add that we also did Clomid/IUI last time, also had three follies, and ended up with ONE daughter....

Anyhow, at the 6-week u/s, we saw three sacs....and two weeks later, three heartbeats. (One baby didn't make it.) I think shock didn't even begin to describe it, and then, a roller coaster of losing one, etc.

So, it took some time to even adjust to the idea of two -- but, by 24 weeks or so, I was *done* with the nursery, had all the gear, and am now just ready and waiting for the babies to come.

I can't even fathom having found out only a week ago! Holy cow -- 27 weeks!!!!

I guess I am like some of the other posts. We, well I found out at 8 weeks. I went in and found out I was preggers @ 5 weeks, went back a week later and was told to bring DH b/c they would do an u/s. DH rescheduled a business trip to the following week. Well, we get there and all they done was draw blood and make us watch that video and ask all about our family histories.
So I had an appt for an 8 wk c/u w/ my ob and didn't think about them doing an u/s so dh wasn't there. I go in and they do a vaginal u/s and I jokingly ask, only 1 right? OB says yea. Then he gets this serious look on his face & start mumbling to his nurse all dr talk. I get worried and he said, see that heartbeat, I said yeah, you already showed me that. He said, No, that is a SECOND heartbeat! I had to go have a BIG u/s, (sorry, I don't know what to call it) where I got pictures. I cried there and the next 2 days! ;)
The only thing I could think of was 2 of everything. 2 child care, 2 insurances, 2 car seats, 2 colleges... Now I can't imagine my life w/ anything other than 2 of the same :D .

We did IVF and put back two embys. It was our second IVF because our first where they put back three didn't take. I was surprised to find out I was pregnant, but at 6 weeks we found out it was twins. I thought DH was going to pass out in the room. You would think that we would have prepared ourselves for it because the chances were so high. BUT, we were both in total shock. It did take quite a bit of figuring on our part to prepare our finances for twins. I can't imagine finding out later in the pregnancy.

6w4d. I had an early u/s and blood work since my last pregnancy was a m/c. That's when we found out. However, at my first official appointment at 10 weeks I measured 15 ... so we would have found out that day anyway.
