I know doctors give all different advice on when CIO is okay. WHen did you do it?

We did it at 5 1/2 months. It took just a few nights. I posted our CIO story in the first year handbook sticky.

We did at 5mo b/c DS was the only one waking and his weight was good and I knew he was eating enough during the day.

We did it at 6 1/2 months and I would call it a complete success. They now wake up at 6am for a feeding and go back to sleep. A few of us posted in the March/April 2007 Buddy Club under "CIO survivors".

At about 5 months I did a little CIO for them to soothe themselves to sleep for either naps or bedtime. But if they awoke in the middle of the night, I fed them.

We did it at 4.5 months. It took ten days, and was HARD, but they have been amazing sleepers ever since.

I was the exact same!! Just to learn to self soothe which we started when my two were 6 months old. If my two woke at night I fed them. They only woke once a night. At around 6.5/7 months they stopped waking for night time feedings and now sleep right through from 7pm to 7am.

My pediatrician said the best time was between ages 4 to 6 months.

I didn't do CIO with the boys, but I did do it with Dave at 15 months. Most doctors recommend waiting until 6 months to start CIO.

We waited til about 7 months. We were behind the eight ball after it took a long time to diagnose Kevin with reflux (Pat was at 3 months). It worked ok then. We still have to practice it every night though. They cry when we put them to bed for about 5 minutes. They also cry during the night sometimes, 1 or 2 minutes here and there. Good luck!

We did it fairly early, at 3 1/2 months. My son was busting out of his swaddle and couldn't get himself to sleep without it, even in the middle of the night. We tried easing him out of it, but it didn't work. The kids had already made it through the night without a bottle a couple of times, so we knew they could do it. So we went cold turkey with everything. 1 horrible night of crying, the next night ds woke up twice for about 5 minutes each (dd never woke up), and they've been sleeping since.

we started letting them CIO at bed time a few weeks ago (4.5 months) my ds was consistently crying 30 minutes after he fell asleep. i would go in and feed him again and put him down and it would start all over. he cried for 19 minutes the first night, 6 the next, 0, then 20 minutes, back to 5 and now he rarely cries when we put him down.

they are 5 months old in a few days and we are beginning to let them cry for nap times. it is even HARDER than nightime because they really fight it! i'll come back to update how it goes after the next week or so of letting them cry for naps.

good poll, it's always interesting to see other's experiences with CIO

I did CIO with Jake at 6 months. Emma slept through on her own at 4. I also did CIO with my older boys, one at 6 months, one at 9. CIO with the 9 month old was the most difficult and took the longest.

Elliot learned to go to sleep on his own, so it was not an issue.

With Clarissa, we tried CIO many times, but she would cry so hard that she threw up EVERY night, and weight gain was so important for her that we didn't stick with it.

Finally at 21 months we felt she was ready and did it for real (right around this time last year - I remember that I decided for clocks to change to start it). It took a couple of nights, and she really was ready for it.
