When can you start giving them water?

I'm curious about this. At what age can I start giving them water in a sippy cup? Thanks!!

 

You can start anytime. I started around 5 months!

 

I think after 6 months is fine. Our pedi said for the first 6 months, there is enough water in their formula for them. I never did give water though, I went to juice at 6 months... it was watered down though, does that count?

 

What I read was to start water when you start solid foods, which for us was 6 months. It took several months for them to really get the hang of the sippy cup, but we'd hold it up for them and they'd take a few sips. They don't need much water, especially while they're still on pureed food that has water in it.

 

I replied to this in another post... there is concern of water intoxification in infants who drink water under 6 months of age. Their kidneys are not sufficiently able to handle it before then. I read an article in Parade Magazine about it and then Googled it and there are many reputable websites that discuss this and caution against giving infants water (my Ped. said an ounce or so now and then will not hurt, but not on a regular basis until after 6 months.). I would check with your own ped. to be sure if you are concerned.

 

We started giving the twins water in their sippy cups at six months.

 

I started around 6 months with the older kiddo's and intend to do the same with the twins.
