When can they have shellfish?

My dh & inlaws are going out to eat tonight (I have to work late). They are going to a fish house and I just know that my FIL will try to feed them everything that he can think of. Can they have shell fish yet? I know dh will order shrimp & devil crabs; FIL will probably get flounder, but I just want to be ahead of them and say yes or no to the shellfish.

    TIA!

I wasn't told that they can't have it just to limit it.

At our one year checkup the ped said no nuts and no shellfish. I don't know why and didn't ask. You may want to make a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches for your DH to take with him. That is what we do when we're go out and I don't think there will be much for DS and DD to eat.

pedi said if they have no other allergies to just limit the weekly amount...my kids have had scallops and clams and did just fine!

Our ped is very conservative on shellfish and says not until 3 years. He freely admits there are doctors in his own practice who disagree, but we're sticking with the cautious route. Why don't you give yours a call and make your decision that way?

Ours said this too. He also said 3 years for peanut butter, but then his nurse told us we could go ahead and try it (at 18 months) since we hadn't had any allergies so far. It's a pain not having them be able to eat shrimp, so I'm only waiting till 2 years.

Even if you are OK with them trying shellfish soon, I would not want the first time to be while they're out to dinner with someone else. You should always try a new food (at least one with a high risk of reaction) in the morning, in a very small amount, and then observe them closely for a day or two. If you're not even going to be there, you won't be able to control what or how much they eat. It would just make me too nervous.

This is one thing I think you'll get a wide variety of responses for. Even though we've had no reactions to any foods so far, I was going to wait until 3... but then accidently fed them shrimp (it was in something). Since then, I've given them a little shrimp and a few bites of crab. They did fine so I quit worrying about a taste here and there. I'm not sure why peanuts would be OK but shellfish wouldn't -- both can give a very bad reaction in those who are allergic and should be introduced with caution.

Our pedi recommended age 3 as well, so that's what we are doing.

I would just limit it. My guys have tried nuts and shellfish.
