When can I feed the babies cheese?

They started on yogurt last week and LOVE it. I just mix natural yogurt with fruit purees. Now what about cheese? I was thinking cottage cheese or grated mild cheddar as a finger food?

I have given my babies cheese for a couple of months now. At their 9 month check up the Ped said I could start giving them meats and diary, but I had already started. What I found worked the best for cheese, was getting a bag of crumbles at the store. They were already in small chunks. We just started on yogurts.

I was wondering the same thing....my girls also started yogurt this week so I am ready for cheese too... always looking for new finger foods.

New_Mom - this is what I mean! Conflicting advice everywhere! My doc said to start meat at 7 months (haven't yet though) and yours said 9 months. How are we supposed to know what to do when!? My Mummy instinct is telling me to try cheese but I don't want to mess with their little tummies (and potentially cause allergies?) if it's too early.

Yes, there certainly is conflicting advice everywhere. I always go with what our Pedi says, unless I were to disagree with their thinking, which hasn't happened yet. On that note, our pedi told me at the girls' 9 mo. appt. that I could have started cheese by then. I told him I did try it around 8 months and Lauren threw it all up, and then some.

My ped split the difference and said to start meats at 8 months.. and gave us no advice about when to start finger foods or yogurt. We are still working our way thru all the stage 1 purees.

I think you should go with your mommy insticts to do what is best for your kiddos. GL! -Leighann

i tihink really every baby is different. mine are almost a year, and we just started meats, but mainly because i was worried about their abiliyt to chew it adequatly! we also were able to do yogurt, but DD had problems with shredded cheese- she'd spit up a lot a few hours later. my MD is pretty conservative and said he advised holding out on that much dairy until closer to a year. once we cut it out, she was fine. that was around 9 months. i've recently given her a little more again, and she is better with it now. she LOVED it then, just didn't sit well with her later. actually, she pretty much loves everything, little chubber!!!!! anyway, i'd just go with the "average" like pp said, as long as you don't have any major reason not too, such as family history of allergy. i think that along with choking is the main concern.
