Well....we let our first have hers until she was 3 years old, but after around 18 months, she only had it for naps and night.

I would wait until they have a cold and aren't sleeping well anyway. It is harder for them to use it when they can't breath, so you can just get rid of it then. At 5 months, I don't think you are going to have much trouble at all.

Dave's we got rid of at 1 year old. He tossed it in the trash. [IMG] Emma never took one. With these guys I'm going to let them dictate how often they want a binky until they are 6 months old, then we'll cut ut down to naps and sleeptime. If they still take them when they are 1, we'll toss them out as well. We make it into a game, so it goes over pretty well.

Actually you don't have to take it away that soon...

    Mine still have theirs.

Just curious why you're taking them away this young.

We took DS's away when he was a little over a year. He started to have trouble saying some words because he alway had the bink in his mouth, it was his best friend. He called it his BeeBin. Anyways we cut off the tip of his binkies and he was totally grossed out by the feel of it in his mouth. It might sound cruel but it is better than having them go through speech therapy when they are older. It took a couple of weeks for him to totally forget about it.

Just do what works for you, yours are still young so you might use a different approach if you plan on taking them away now.

With my 3 older kids, we took it away at 1 yr, but at about 10 or 11 months we started phasing it out..only when sleeping, whether in their crib or in the car seat, and then after a couple weeks of that we would only let them have it in their crib...we never took it out. Thankfully, the twins have never wanted their pacis out of their crib so hopefully weaning them will be a a little bit easier. Good luck!

Our boys had theirs until they were about 26 months - and it was horrbile getting them away from them. They had become so attached it was heartbreaking - but like a pp they weren't talking as much/well because they always had their "B-B"

So with DD we made the decision to take it at 1 year - we just stopped giving it to her on her birthday. I was worried it would be too muchsince we also stopped giving bottle cold turkey the same day - but she did great.

We're planning on the same approach with our latest arrivals as well.

I could tell that he no longer needed it and just wanted it. I had personal reasons and my ped gave us some safety reasons to try to be done with them prior to walking so that was my goal. We just slowly phased it out, from anytime during the day to just sleeping to just bedtime to not needing it at all.

I waited til my ds was two and explained that the binkie fairy would take it away when he left it on the window sill and then the binkie fairy left a present, and he hasn't asked for it since.

Our ped (Weissbluth) advised the following. By 9 months of age, they should only use them at bed and/or nap time, and if not, eliminate them completely. So that's what we did. He said there is no reason to take it from them if they only use it as a soother for sleeping.

My dd only used them at nap and bed time and was fine with that. Last summer, we went to Target and she chose and bought the Dora twin doll and "paid" with her pacifiers ... We had mentioned for several weeks that the pacis needed to go to the babies. It was incredibly smooth. She only asked for 1 night, slept through the night like she always did and that was it. At the time, she was a little over 2. We decided to do it before the twins arrived and before she went to school (where she naps, but cannot have a paci).

Oh this is a cute idea! I'll have to remember this one if we have trouble when the time comes for DD to give up her nuk

My girls both gave it up by themselves at about that age. Sierra picked it up for a few months again at 10 months old because she found one but then she gave it up again on her own.

Mine quit wanting them around 4 months -- we relied on them heavily for soothing, but they just stopped working all of a sudden -- the girls would spit them out. That's probably not much help....

The girls never took a pacifier, so I guess I'm lucky on that.

We got rid of them 3 days ago. DH had major issues with the dummies, although I would rather tham use their dummies than their thumb. I will say though that we went cold turkey, and Nate no longer wakes up in the middle of the night looking for it which gives me a nice break! It bothers Andrew during the day, but he is getting attached to a blankie instead. Unfortunately they are both now going for their thumbs...ahhhhhh
