The boys are 6 weeks old and still one the slow flow nipples. Jonathan is a chow hound and does not make a mess. David on the other hand is a different story. He is lazy and flat out makes a mess. If he is not in the mood, he will not take it or even swallow the food.

When do we change to a different nipple size?

I changed them when the kids seemed to be sucking harder than necessary or when they seemed to be frustrated by the slowness of the nipples. I was also a big fan of those cross cut nipples for feeding thickened liquids because the hole would adjust based on how hard they sucked.

It took me a while to change nipple sizes. I changed when they weren't finishing their bottles anymore or would fall asleep mid bottle. They would also get fussy. You will know.

I would change it when they start getting frustrated/or are not finishing a bottle.

We changed when I kept struggling to get them to drink more formula. I really liked the y-cut's too. The first time or two they will be surprised how much more they get, but they will get used to it.

I changed when they seemed to be frustrated with how slow the bottle was.

I use the Avent brand bottles. Their slow flow is for 0+ mos, med. flow for 3+ mos., and the fast flow for 6+ mos. I used that as a guide along with looking at how quickly they were taking the bottle.

when they seemed to not be able to drink enough in a long time is when I knew we needed a bigger hole...

call me cheap... but I just took a knife or sharp pair of scissors and cut a tiny slit in the existing hole... I mean I wasn't planning on re-using the nipples... so why buy new? anyway, that worked for us! If you do that, just do one at a time and make sure you don't get it too big... cause then too much will come out and it will get very messy!
