I can't handle that one. The girls have it but I've only read it to them once b/c I couldn't make it through it!

My favorite book that they have is "My Sister and I". They got it from a friend for their first birthday. It is SO sweet and perfect for twin sisters! DH's favorite is "The Runaway Bunny."

    Goodnight Gorilla
    I Am a Bunny
    Hand Hand Fingers Thumb
    Hop on Pop
The Wheels on the Bus (companion book to the Raffi CD, though we only have the book)
    Pat the Bunny

And a couple of the ABC books with photographs of things that start with different letters. Amy is waaaay into this right now because she is learning the words for all those things.

And anything with bunnies in it. They are not into listening to the words right now, they just want to point at the pictures.

My girls loved the "Lulu" books at that age - "Hello Lulu", "Lulu's Holiday", "Lulu's Busy Day" and "Happy Birthday Lulu". Also, "We're going on a bear hunt" by Michael Rosen - that was Alice's favourite from 16 months, for about three months. And Olivia - any of the Olivia books. But we didn't buy a real lot for them until they turned two, because everything was likely to go in their mouths if they were tired or bored. The local library was brilliant for board books - we would take a huge shopping bag and load it up every visit! Good luck! It's so much fun shopping for books.

My girls LOVE the books by Sandra Boynton!!! She's awesome IMO! Their faves are The Belly Button Book and Barnyard Dance. I want to get them more too. They will pick these two books out of every book that we have every single time. They are just really cute books and not too long that they lose their attention. However, they have chewed through the binding on them and completely destroyed them, so someday I'm going to buy them new so they have to give to their kids someday.

Oh, I thought of something else. ABC books. There are sooooooo many of them on you can find them on just about any topic. So if there is something your kids are into right now (cats, dogs, bugs, sesame street, etc..) you can most likely find one on it. Of course, counting books are great also and Just like ABC books, there is a plethera of them.

Another author that I thought about that I really like is Ezra Jack Keats. He has a lot of great books and a lot of repeat characters in them.

Most of the ones mentioned here so far are on my boy's bookshelf and are great!

One thing I would add is that for inquisitive children, it probably doesn't matter who the book's authors are as long as they recognize objects in it. So our soon-to-be 20-month-old already has some favorites because there are balls, cars or dogs in it, and he loves to point them out to us and "read" the book to us. Luckily, he has two older brothers who were avid readers too and we won't be in a shortage for books anytime soon.

I do think the Sandra Boynton books did a great job in teaching Brady and Colby how to read (obviously we're a little bit away from that with Holden).

And I guess one other thing I would add is I personally like the hard books at this age as it's too easy for the little ones to rip and destroy the paperback or flimsy books and I want him to learn early to take care of his books.
