I switched mine to water during the when they were drinking too much milk. They are now within limits. They get milk at night and at meals.

If I understand correctly, the recommendations surrounding milk consumption are to ensure that they are progressing toward getting the bulk of their nutrition from food. Drinking too much milk will make them full and they won't have an appetite for the variety of nutrients in the table food you are trying to promote.

It is a PROGRESSION, however. At 13 months, they are probably still getting a great deal of their nutrition from milk. I wouldn't be too concerned at this point, but I would work toward having them eventually drink less and eat more.

I agree that the reason they tell you not to give them too much milk is so they get their nutrition from food. If they fill up on milk they won't want to eat as much. Personally I would not give them more than 18-20 oz (and that is still a lot) of the Good start 2, to be sure they are eating enough food. Mine get milk at each meal and a bottle before bed, but have no more than 16 oz. of milk a day, I don't measure, but know they aren't drinking that much. They get juice at snack time. Mine are just now starting to drink more from the sippy, but I know they are eating well.

Don't give them too much milk. It's not just because they won't eat other food. Even if they do eat a lot of other foods, the calcium in the milk will inhibit the absorption of iron from their food and they can become quite anemic. They still need nutrition from the milk, too, but too much can cause a lot of problems. My ped gives the same recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics: 16-24 ounces of milk each day. That's 2-3 cups/bottles. If they want more to drink, offer them water.

I think I would try and give it to them with their meal. Will they drink it from a sippy cup? I would try that and see how they do, that would also help you get rid of the bottles, if you want.

Or if you want to keep the bottles, try giving them the meals first then the bottle. Give breakfast before the first bottle.

At 12-13 months, we had switched to whole milk and were down to two bottles a day. We then did away with bottles and they did sippies instead, still at two a day (breakfast and before bed). They probably drink 10 oz of milk a day. PP's stated the reason for not so much milk, my doctor recommended 16 oz a day or less, especially if they are eating a decent amount of dairy. Just a warning, mine were drinking over 16 oz when we first switched off of formula and got quite constipated.
Personally, I would try to ease them off the number of bottles a day.

I would give them no bottle or milk with meals, after only, & try adding snacks. My girls always liked a snack before nap & when they took 2 naps we snacked after the second nap too, we still snack! I imagine they would drink water as well as milk if they are thirsty & not hungry.

Pediatricians have different ideas about how much milk kids should be drinking. My pediatrician told me my kids should be drinking 24 oz of milk a day (per each kid).
