What's a Biophysical Test?

    Hi,

I had a follow up u/s yesterday because my little girl was 20% smaller than my boy. she now 23% smaller but the Dr said that's not really anything to worry about. She's gaining weight and they both seem to be developing normally. He said he wants to do an u/s every 2 weeks from now to make sure.

But when I went to check out, the lady up front told me next time I'm having a biophysical test not an u/s. What is that? I'm a little concerned that the Dr didn't explain that to me in the room. Now I'm not convinced that everything really is ok. Has anyone had this kind of test and can tell me what's involved? Or has anyone gone through something like this? I'm starting to get scared now and don't want to worry for the next 2 weeks.

Maybe a biophysical profile? I found a link here. Maybe this is what they meant??

That sounds like what I'm having done this Thursday! My ob is sending me to a perinatalist to have the u/s done. She said it's routine (at least for her practice), that she does it with all her multiple mommies. I'm 21 weeks now and thus far have had no complications, so I wouldn't worry too much about having it done. My last u/s was at 14 wks and all was good then. I'll take any chance to see my babies! And from the sound of it, for an extended period of time!

I have them twice a week because my two mono/di boys have a 25% size difference. My peri said that the test is basically to make sure that the environment in the womb is still healthy for them to stay inside. They check their fluid levels, cord dopplers, movement, practice breathing, and heart rate. If they keep passing their test, my peri will keep them in until we can test their growth again (every two weeks). The biophysical profiles are usually done with non stress tests, but not always. Don't worry if they don't pass the movement part. A few times one of my boys has been asleep and refused to get up during the 30 min time limit to see him moving, but he still "passed" the test.
