What type of medicines did you use in first year?

Hi! I'm due on 6/15 and am changing to my husband's insurance on 5/1 (his is fully paid by his new company). Anyway, I have a flexible spending account w/ my company and if I don't spend it - I lose it! I can buy drugs/healthcare stuff at drugstore.com and was wondering what types of baby medicines you have really used and felt you couldn't live w/o. I have absolutely no idea - these are our first and am clueless as to this stuff. But since I'll lose the money I figured I might as well get some necessities.
    :) THANKS!

We mostly had over the counter meds, thankfully my guys were hardly ever prescribed anything. Jack was on Zantac and Reglan for reflux.

We used Mylicon drops and tylenol the most. Also AYR nasal saline spray.

thanks - all over the counter stuff is what I'd get - this flex spending account covers that. I was thinking baby tylenol, etc. Just didn't know exactly what to get

The only prescribed things we use are their multivitamin w/fluoride. Other things in our medicine cabinet are gripe water and Tylenol, but those are OTC.

Tylenol, Motrin, saline drops (for noses), Vitamin D drops if you are BF.

Tylenol and Motrin were biggies at our house. I'd make yourself some nice first aid kits: bandages, gauze, neosporin, Benadryl, etc. I usually re-stock mine every year with my left over flex plan money.

Childrens Tylenol and Motrin, Benadryl, Mylicon gas drops and liquid vitamin w/out flouride are what we use in our house.

Well, let me see.....I've got my medicine box right here.....

    infant Tylenol

    infant Motrin

..... you'll want to have both kinds

    gas drops

    baby orajel

    vaseline

    vick's baby rub

    bandaids

    nose bulb

    thermometer

...... now a word about thermometers. I have been thru so many!! I got the expensive ear kind, but then was told you can't use it for a long time. And, I never get the same reading when I do use it, even on myself. I would get a couple of the cheaper kinds, since they don't seem to last long. The last thing you want is a feverish baby at 2am and no working thermometer. I've had the best luck with the Vick's brand

Little Noses (baby saline nose drops)

    extra thermometer tip covers

I don't know if your pharmacy carries it, but I also have the Hyland's teething tablets & they have been great!

And, if your account will cover it I would also get a cool mist humidifier.

I think certain decongestants take a while to expire, so if that's the case, why not also buy meds that they can use in their 2nd year (just make sure they don't expire by then).. So, in addition to the INFANT Tylenol and Advil, why not also buy the Children's versions (which are for older kids), plus the decongestants? Does your insurance also cover an item like a humidifier? You'll need one of those as well.

    Good luck!

    mylicon drops and tylenol

I agree on not getting an expensive thermometer. Other may have good luck but for us personally, we got different readings. Also, our ped said if we called because they were sick, they would ask us what the rectal temp was because that is most accurate. So I have a small digital one .

Just repeating some that have already been suggested.

    Infant Tylenol . . . a lot

    Infant Motrin

    Little Noses (Saline drops) . . . a lot

Hyland's Teething Tablets . . . work for my little ones

Mylicon . . . This didn't work that great for us; however, it does for many others.

Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy!
