What to use for bad diaper rash?

Natalie came home from preschool today with a bad case of diaper rash. It is very red and uncomfortable (she is waddling around the house). The rash is on her vaginal area and on her inner left thigh (where the diaper sits). The area on the thigh kind of looks like a bug bite... a raised welt. It's not an open sore nor is there any liquid inside the welt. I called the pedi's office and the nurse said that as long as it wasn't "really angry looking" (whatever that means) and she didn't have a fever, to just treat it like I would a normal diaper rash. We've always just used balmex and that has worked great for us.

Anyone else have experience with this? Any cream work better than others? I was thinking of putting a little bacitracin on the welt on her thigh, hopefully to help things heal so she can walk normally. I have no idea what caused this. She didn't try any new foods yesterday. We were at Sesame Place on Sunday... and the only "new" thing I can think of would be the chlorine and other chemicals in the water.

    Thanks!!

Catherine, this happened to Kayla after Sesame Place the year we had to use swim diapers (basically the reason I was really targeting Sesame Place as a potty training goal for the next year). I felt sooooo bad for Kayla. A day of consistant aquaphor and really caking it on before bed did the trick! I think it was the swim diaper more than the chemicals for Kayla, or maybe a combination of both???

Hope she is feeling better soon!

Dianne - I wouldn't have even thought of the swim diapers. Well, I will definitely keep the aquaphor on it and try to keep it dry. Good info to have for the next outing to the pool. Thanks!

I just tried the Aveeno butt cream and it was awesome! I usually put the cream on it and then sprinkle baby powder with baking soda on it. It is the only time I use baby powder. It usually clears it right up.
    Good luck

Triple Paste. It works great and you don't need a whole lot.

I agree with Triple Paste. Also let her run around without a diaper on.

I'll put in a third vote for Triple paste. It has always helped.

Butt Paste with A&D ointment or the Aveeno stuff worked great for my little guy.
    Hope she's feeling better soon!

Pure Corn Starch. Not the J&J kind - the kind you find in the baking isle at the grocery store. It is a very old home remedy, and it WORKS FAST!

At night I would but a layer of vaseline and the Corn Starch on top of that.

    I hope it clears up!!

The bacitracin or neosporin will work well. Lily had a terrible rash, bad enough and recurrent enough for me to take her to the pedi, and he said to use either of those. Cleared it up quickly and it stayed away.

For the run of the mill diaper rash we use Boudreaux Butt Paste.

Triple Paste Triple Paste, Triple Paste ! Its the combination of most of things mentioned above. Its like getting Desitin, powder and vaseline all together. If we've ever gotten a bad rash that didn't respond to normal methods its always fixed it fast.

Is triple paste something I can buy at Target or the grocery store?

I used the bacitracin last night and this morning, plus lots and lots of aquaphor. It definitely looked better for a few hours, but now it's getting worse again. Arg. I think I'll try the cornstarch next and see if DH can pick up some triple paste on the way home.

If it really was the swim diapers we're in trouble since we're spending the weekend at the beach. :icon_eek:

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Amber just got over some diaper rash. I always swear by a tub of Desitin (original). Messy but it does the job. Take a big ole glob and spread. Heals and protects. I also ran her bath with some Aveeno oatmeal bath powder packets that desolve in the water AND I poured just plan ole arm and hammer bakins soda in her bath. No soap. No shampoo. Just let them sit in it for as long as possible and bathe them with the water from the bath. That was night #1. By the next morning we could tell that it was no longer quite as red and inflamed. By the morning after that it was hardly there any longer. But keep doing this til it's completely healed and gone.

I swear by Destin as well. The Aveeno Oatmeal baths are good too. Also never clean with a wipe when they have a rash (use a warm wash cloth) as that will irritate it even more.

    Good luck.

Both of ours had a really bad diaper rash that we couldn't get rid of. We tried Butt paste (which helped a bit), Triple Paste (did nothing) and Desitin (did nothing). I finally started applying generic Walmart A&D cream religiously at every single diaper change. I mean, I slather it on! Within one week, the rash cleared up and it hasn't returned a month later!

We seem to have luck with Pinxav ( I think is the spelling and you say it like "pink salve"). You usually can get it at the pharmacy- it's behind the counter at ours for some odd reason- it only is like $4 a tube and does wonders with our girls.

I've never looked for it at the grocery store, but I can find it around here at Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, I actually even saw it at Bed Bath and Beyond and it was a bit cheaper than Target there.

It is a bit pricey, but it works so well, it's worth it in my opinion. I only use it for bad rashes, regular rashes I use Butt Paste.

Depending on the diaper rash somethings will make it worse... if it is a yeast infection (very common) triple paste, cornstarch... with make it REDDER. (the starch feeds the yeast). So if it gets worse then you know to use a very thin layer of an antifungal cream with plain a&d over it! For regular rashes I like a cream called Li'l Goat it has 40% zinc oxide

Olivia had a bad rash after she was on antibiotics once. Pedi said use Maalox, plain flavor(yes the stuff for upset stomachs/heartburn) during the day & also original desitin. I guess the trick to desitin is not to wash it off, just pat with a cool washcloth, not wipes. The maalox takes the redness & irritation/burning away. Both cleared her up pretty quickly. Hope she's better soon. BTW, since it's nice out, going bottomlees is a good thing too!
