I know this will get moved, but I am trying to figure out a way to keep Claire from coughing during the night.

As soon as we lay her down it starts. We called the pedi, and they said it was most likely from the house being dry. We put a pan of water in front of the vent for now so it adds moisture to the room. Putting Vicks on her feet worked at first, but now it isn't. I just don't know what to do.

They never mentioned giving her anything for it, and I am not sure if I can. Do they having anything for a cough for children under 2?

Besides this she isn't sick. She has a slight runny nose, but is also teething. No fever, eats and drinks fine, etc... She just coughs at night.

    TIA

There isn't much OTC that works for little ones, unfortunately.

Ask your pedi if it's okay to give her honey -- if so, give her sips of very warm water with honey dissolved in it, and then give her a spoon of honey straight -- it coats the throat.

That, plus the Vicks on feet and chest, is all I've got...

if the pedi is willing to give you a script perhaps you can try Rynatan - but it is also an antihistamine and decongestant as well as a cough suppressant...

is there mucus? If so, I feel safe (and my peds office does as well) giving them half a tsp of PLAIN children's sudafed. That helps thin it out, so they can swallow it easier, and it won't clog their throat, causing them to cough. HTH and hope it gets better soon. Also, how long has it been going on? Joel had a chronic cough that lasted a month and a half after a bad virus, and it finally went away after singulair, a breathing treatment, amoxicillin, and albuterol. I'm not entirely sure if it was one thing or another, or a combination of all those combined- but that's what finally kicked that terrible night time cough!

Maybe it's the dryness, maybe it's saliva that is produced more when they are teething, maybe it's allergies...

Like previous poster mentioned... HONEY... I've used honey with all three of mine before bed and it takes the edge off a cough. I've also given it to them during the night if they can't stop coughing.

Prop-up her mattress too... put a towel under it. If she is using a pillow... give her a second pillow.

Sometimes it helps too... to turn the child on her/his side during the night... not that they'll stay there... but it helps if a drip is involved.

    Good luck.

Well, I know you are not supposed to give kids things...and I understand why. Because of the overuse of it all! So, that said, I think the occassional small dose of things like Benedryl (it dries up the dripping...easing the coughing) or Delsym (my favorite OTC cough remedy) are ok in my book. As a parent, that is a decision you need to make, but those are what I use.

My son's peditrician was a big fan of Pedia Care. So we occasionally will give PediaCare cough if it's needed.
