Do they like games? By 5 they can understand the rules for a lot of things.

Or maybe something arts and crafty like paint, plastercine/clay, things for sticking etc-something for them to do rather than more toys.

We have girls, so not too sure for boys, but they're getting Baby Alive and games, so Operation and Trouble are the games (which might be also good for your son).

Those backogon (not sure how to spell) are very popular with the boys at the moment (got them for my nephew)

Timothy is all about wanting Hot Wheels track and cars. Sarah wants princesses and Barbie's and clothes that she can change for them. We also started reading some of the American Girl Books and she asked me if they made dolls like that. We won't be getting her one, but it's on her radar.

Both kids love little legos, boardgames, and anything crafty. You also might consider a pass to a Children's museum or a subscription to a kids magazine. Our library has several and the kids like to look through them.

Thank you but I have a question...she loves my laptop...I would love to get something for here that was like that..but wasnt so pricey...

She loves learning type electronic .....we have games but they dont like them that much...so we are working on that. I think she is going to be harder to get things for cuz other than arts craft, and my laptop etc I still dont know what she is into...she plays w/something and mins later she doesnt want to play anymore and has always been like that...she has dolls, barbie, bratz, kitchen stuff, pollys, ponys..... She is always been the hardest one to pick ot for..Bradon know he likes everything and plays hours w/anything and everything.

They do make kids lap tops. My girls got a Barbie one for Christmas a couple of years ago from my bil. I think I saw it at Toys R Us and Target. They probably have an updated one from the one my girls got. It does spelling, numbers, plays like a piano and other things. I think it would probably cost maybe aroun $40 or more and not sure if you want to spend that much. Other than that not sure since my girls love to play with everything. My nephew was into bakugon and star wars. Maybe some transformers for you son?

I saw some laptops for kids at JC Penney, they were on sale too which could be an added bonus!

i have boys so it's easier for me to come up with ideas for boys. automoblox & zoob (esp. the zoob dude) are huge hits with boys 5-8. my boys love them & we give them to all of their friends for their birthdays & they always love them. the automoblox minis are only $10 so you can get your son one to see if he likes them & if he does then you could get him the larger one, which is around $40. as a bonus, both toys have educational value!

ETA: bakugon, star wars & transformers are also big hits with my boys, as are G.I. Joe.

I am getting my 5 year olds Nintendo DS's this year. Their two older brothers are also getting one. Those are the big Santa gifts and we aren't doing anything else large from us - maybe a small toy or two, pajamas, books, etc... My boys have had Gameboy Micros now for almost 2 years and they LOVE them (they love them so much they are completely worn out and now held together with duct tape!) There are a wide variety of games for all age ranges. I know they are going to be so excited with their new handheld systems. They have COMPLETELY worn the old ones out!

My boys also have Leapsters. Those are a bit less expensive ~$60, rather than the $130 for the Nintendo's. They really loved their Leapsters, as well. My only complaint with those is that the touch screens stopped working so now they are useless.

Both the Nintendo's and the Leapsters come in several different colors - including PINK!

I was going to recommend the Leapster as well. MY sister's little boy {4} has one and LOVES it, we're getting one for Beau.

Our boys turn 5 on Dec 22. So we have birthdays/Christmas all at once. Santa is bringing a Wii system for the family. Each of my boys have very specific likes. Ben has been waiting until he turns 5 to get a "Lionel" train set. He is obsessed with trains! Luke is my "gamer". He wants a Ninetendo DS for his b-day. Big ticket items $$$ .

Besides that. My boys like anything LEGO. Hotwheel stunt sets. Remote controlled dinosaurs. Transformers and Power Ranger figures/stuff. Sports jersey/clothing (Steeler fans here). They also love doing craft type stuff. They have mentioned "Pixo's", "Moon Sand" kits and a Lite Brite cube. They also seem to think they would like the board game "Sorry Sliders".

My girls will be five in January. They love My Little Pony, Strwaberry Shortcake, the Care Bears and anything Barbi or princess.

Right now they really like playing with their Fisher Price twin doll house and cars. They love music and dancing, books and puzzles. They also enjoy the I Spy books.

Some of the things they've mentioned they want for Christmas/ ideas that I have :

    Marble Maze
    Ponyville (My Little Pony)
    Scooterloo (My Little pony)
    Baby that crawls
    Baby Alive
    Easy Bake oven
    Laptops!
    Pogo sticks
    Iron/ iron board
    coffee maker
    microwave
    vacume
    Bean bag chairs
    rain boots
    dress up clothes
    tea set
    hula hoops
    Leap pad books and cartiriges
    puppet theater
    guitars
    outdoor climbing dome
    mini trampoline
    musical instruments
    art supplies/ playdough
    Board games (Guess Who, Operation)
    Slippers

They are NOT getting all of this stuff- just listing ideas!
My gilrs love looking at toys online and in sale flyers. Also, I bring them to the toy department and see what they're really interested in.
I don't have any boys, but I recently went to a boy birthday party. He loves Spiderman, so I got him a Spiderman watch and a Spiderman placemant and some camoflage slippers.

Have fun shopping with DH! Let us know what you get. Also, remember that they're going to love anything that they get!

Another vote for games. My girls are getting Operation and Yahtzee. I also bought them the Leapfrog Tag Reader and some books. They are still asking for stuffed animals even though every inch of their beds, baskets and bins are overflowing with them. These are their Santa gifts so who am I to argue.

A great idea which I found and bought for all the 4-6 year olds on my list is the "hoppers" (inflatable balls with the hoop to hang on to that they can bounce on). I remember loving them as a kid and they even came in everyone's favourite characters. Good for boys AND girls.

My DD will be 5 at the end of January. So far, we've had the following ideas for her:

    -bike
    -Wii games (Mario Kart?)
    -Leapster games (Animal Genius)
    -Magna Tiles (http://www.magnatiles.com/)
-Full set of Magic Treehouse books (she's an early reader)
    -Polly Pockets (her request!)
-Craft box (filled with wavy scissors, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, glitter glue, you get the idea)
