What to expect with delivery at 36.3 weeks?

    Hi ladies,

We just found out that our twins will be arriving on Monday via either scheduled c-section or induction (that's another thread!) due to baby A's IUGR. Both babies are still growing well, but it's just gotten to the point where my OB thinks we are better off delivering them than leaving them in an taking the risk that something will go wrong with baby A.

I know every baby is different, but I'm hoping those of you who delivered around this time can share your experiences so I have some rough idea of what to expect. Did your babies spend time in the NICU, and if so, how long and for what reason(s)? When did they come home? Were there any respiratory issues?

My babies are estimated at 5 lbs 9 oz (baby B, the little boy) and close to 5 lbs (baby A, the little girl).

    Thanks so much girls!

Kelly, Mine weren't born at that time, so I have no suggestions but I'm hoping that everything goes okay for you on Monday. 36 weeks is considered full term for twins, so I'm hoping your two have no complications. We can't wait to hear all about it and see pictures!!

Thank you girls! I'm a little anxious about taking them out too soon - I was hoping we'd make it another week to 37.5 weeks. But I guess I just have to trust that they're ready...

I delivered at 36w5d and it was considered full term. My girls were 5-10 and 6-0. Sarah got supplemental oxygen for about an hour after birth and Amy never needed any. They went straight to the regular hospital nursery and came home with me 5 days later. (They were ready to go home earlier, but the doctor wanted to keep me b/c I was running a persistent fever.)

They haven't had any respiratory issues, other than Sarah's tendency to get nagging coughs. But I think this is not due to being born a bit early, and more because she had RSV at 3 months (and that wasn't because she was little either -- it was because she was in daycare). All babies are different, but I bet yours will be just fine. :)

36.4 for us... almost 36.3 (water broke, but didn’t get them out until after midnight...) mine came out perfect straight to our room... weighed 5.9 6.2 and now one is off the charts in height and weight the other 95%....

I delivered at 36.1 wks vaginally and mine weighed 4.14 each. Neither baby needed any oxygen or anything else, came right to our room and never left (the hospital didn't even have a nursery). I would say the most difficult thing with them was that I was breastfeeding but they were so small so I had to really work hard to get my milk in ASAP so they could start gaining weight. Neither one had any jaundice or anything and they are now a whopping 6mths old and very healthy.

Good luck and enjoy the last few days of you pregnancy!!! Sleep now while you still can...

I was 36 weeks 4 days and was induced for different reasons than what you are experiencing (issues with me, not the babies). Joe was 5 lbs. 8 oz. and Margaux was 5 lbs. 3 oz. They spent no time in the nursery (no NICU at our hospital) and we went home three days later. The only issues were with keeping their body temperatures up, so they generally stayed in the isolette for the first couple days when not nursing, and an elevated risk for jaundice with Margaux, so they were under a billi-light for some time. I hope everything goes as smoothly for you and your babies as it did for us!

Ours were delivered at 36.4 and were in the room with us from the start. The only issue was that they were both hypoglycemic, so the nurses fed formula right away to get the blood sugars back up. DD was not a good feeder for the first 3 feedings, so they put in an NG (nasogastric) tube for those feedings. After that, they were both champs.

I started pumping 12 hours after delivery, every 2 hours round the clock. They had formula for most meals with whatever I had pumped in the meantime. This got my milk supply established so I would highly recommend it if you plan to breastfeed.

They were both a little jaundiced, but not enough to require light therapy.

    Best wishes for healthy babies!
ps- we did have an amnio done before induction to confirm that the lungs were developed. Not fun, but good information to have.

I was induced at 36 weeks on the dot and ended up having a c-section. Both girls were fine with No NICU time and we all left the hospital together 3 days later. We had no problems what so ever.

    Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!

My girls came at 35 weeks, due to preclamsia, high blood pressure for myself.
they were 4lbs 7 ounces and 4lbs. 10 ounces. They shared an open isolette in NICU, they needed no oxygen, nothing. They scored 9 on their APGAR test (out of 10). They were in NICU for 7 days, just as feeders and growers. They were perfect. They did give them an IV to supplement them.
Good luck and can't wait to see pics!

My girls were born at 35 weeks and 6 days. They were both over 5 lbs and had no NICU time. The only problem they had was they could not regulate their body temps and we had to keep hats and socks on them and keep them wrapped up 24/7. They had no sucking issues or jaundice or weight issues. We came home after 3 days. Good luck and congratulations!!

Mine were born at 36w3days by scheduled Csection b/c baby A was smaller than baby B and they felt she would benefit more in the real world than en utero. They weighed 4.1 and 5.5 and were healthy. No medical problems, no NICU, nothing. They were a little jaundiced but the levels went down in time to go home with me 3 days later.
They are now 27 months and very healthy. My babygirl (baby A) is still very petite, but healthy nonetheless!
    Good luck!
