What to expect at the 20 week ultrasound?

I'm having my BIG ultrasound tomorrow and I was just wondering what to expect? The receptionist told me that it'll take a half hour to do (15 minutes for each baby). What do you see besides the spine and genders?

Also, how many of you saw the genders at 19-20 weeks? I am so worried that the babies will be too squished up together to be able to tell what they are. The u/s doc we have tomorrow is not exactly known for her beside manner. She's kind of unfriendly and rushes through things. I'm just hoping that she will try her best to find the genders for us! I bought a full-caffeine, full-sugar 20oz coke to drink tomorrow morning in case the babies aren't cooperating, LOL.

Anyway, sorry for babbling, I'm just soooo excited for tomorrow morning! [IMG]

It took over an hour for my BIG ultrasound, and the tech was able to tell right away what they were.
I believe they measured their heads, spines, femurs looked at their hearts, brains and kidneys. We also saw their heartbeats.
Good Luck tommorrow. Hope the babies cooperate and you get to find out what they are!

I had mine two days ago and they measured everything: femurs and humoris, arm bones, looked at the brains, checked the four ventricles of the heart, reconfirmed no cleft palate or lip, measured the diameter of the stomach, looked at the kidneys.

We didn't want to see genders, but i thought that i might anyway - however, they were moving around so much it was difficult for the sonographer to get some good measurements; she kept having to go back.

Try not to worry and enjoy - it's so much fun to see those little ghosts inside us!

[IMG] What an exciting day tomorrow is going to be for you! At 19/20 wks you should definitly be able to tell what gender the babies are if they cooperate. Of course, it is much easier to tell boys than girls. It may take one more u/s to confirm the genders. Mine both cooperated and looked obviously like boys. But I still didn't rest assured until my next u/s and the second viewing of the privates. What the pp said about measurements is right on with what I had done. I also had a transvaginal u/s to measure my cervix in addition to the rest.

Yeah I've had quite a few people tell me that their ultrasounds were about an hour or so. I wonder if mine will go longer then?

Did everyone have a vaginal ultrasound? My parents are coming to this ultrasound.. having my mom there doesn't bug me but ummmm I don't want a vaginal u/s in front of my dad! LOL

My insurance only pays for one U/S during a normal pregnancy, so my OB had me schedule a few days short of 20 weeks on a Friday since we were flying to Europe for 3+ weeks to visit family on the following Monday. She told me there was a good chance to tell the gender if the babies cooperated at 19-20 weeks and usually has patients schedule their U/S at 20-21 weeks. Of course, we got the surprise of our lives when we found out there were two babies! They both had their legs crossed every time the tech checked, so we had to wait until the 24 week U/S to find out gender. My first U/S was at the hospital my OB's office is attached to and where we delivered. It was the major anatomical scan and we were told to allow one hour when we scheduled it blissfully unaware that we were having twins. It actually took about an hour and 15 mins. The rest of my U/S-every 4 weeks-were done at a perinatology clinic by a tech experienced with twin pregnancies. I think the shortest visit was at 36 weeks because he couldn't get a lot of the measurements on A because of her position and that took 45 minutes.

I had a regular on the stomach ultrasound and it took about an hour. My tech did all the measurements and then let DH in. We could see the sex of Baby A but had to wait until just this week to see the sex of Baby B. It was NOT cooperating!! Plus they are girls so that's harder to see.

    Good Luck and have fun!!

Good Luck on your ultrasound today. I had a vaginal u/s too to check my cervix. BUT, the tech did it last so that everyone we had brought with us could leave the room. Definately didn't want my MIL seeing my bottom!

I had mine "big u/s" at 18 weeks. It was about an hour. So maybe be prepared for longer. They just have to take alot of measurements of each baby. Mine were fine. And I am told they are both boys without a doubt....here's hoping they are right, as I'm gonna go little boy stuff crazy right after Xmas. I found it harder to see the actual baby in this u/s, than the 12 weeks one. I guess cause they are bigger. They'd be like theres a leg, theres this theres that, and I was like??? really? I don't see it! lol!!! good luck!

Yup, transvaginal cervical measurement which mine did at the end, so you can have your dad leave. He'd probably get freaked out by the 10 incher the insert! (sorry)

Thanks for the good luck wishes everyone! I just realized I haven't been on here to update yet.

We were able to see the genders and we are having one of each!!! (They are only 90% sure on the boy since he wasn't cooperating as well, but my little girl is definitely all female!!) We are THRILLED. We had a **** of time conceiving and these will be our first (and probably last) children, so we could not be happier!!! [IMG]

I did have a vaginal ultrasound, but the dr did it first while my parents waited outside and then my husband went and got them while they were prepping me for the belly u/s. [IMG] It was a great day for all of us!!! The doc said the babies were too "deep" to do the anatomy (we saw the hearts, brains, bellies, femurs, and genders, but nothing else) ... but they said I have to go back for an ultrasound there in the ultrasound center every 4 weeks for the rest of the pregnancy, so they'll do it next time. Yay!!!!
