I am having my GD test on Wednesday. I am worried that I might have it. I always feel real weak alot of the times, but I know it could just be being pregnant. My doctor says she doesn't suspect that I would have it because a.) It doesn't run in my family and b.) I am not overweight and c.) I am healthy (normally). But i am still worried - I know i have a higher risk because of twins.

what should I eat the morning of the test to help my chances - and what should I avoid?

My Dr. said to have either an (one) egg or a piece of dry toast ,if I needed food in the morning before my appointment but not both. And nothing to eat after midnight (except for the previous foods mentioned in the morning). I wouldn't worry too much about it. And the drink they make you drink doesn't taste too bad. It reminds me of Orange Crush. I bet you will be just fine! Good Luck!!

If it is your one hour test you can eat anything that is not sugary. They said I could eat eggs, toast without jelly, cereal that is not sugary, oatmeal, anything like that. They said not to drink juice or eat fruit. Just eat something that doesn't have sugar. Good luck.

I think all doctors recommend different thins. I know of some people who couldn't eat anything before their 1 hour. My doctor said just not to eat anything like pancakes and syrup for breakfast.

Now, I had eggs but I also really wanted a small glass of OJ, and I had that. I shouldn't have!! I also ate nuts about 1 1/2 hours before the test. I failed the 1 hour (not by too much) but passed the 3 hour. I really think the juice did it.

When I had mine they told me just to eat normally. When I took it with the other girls, you couldn't eat anything.

With the twins, I wasn't allowed to eat anything for neither the 1 hour nor the 3 hour test.

I had my 1 hour GD test while in the hospital on bedrest, and the nurse had me eat nothing until the test was over.

For the 1 hr the doc gave me a list of what not to eat. Basically, the same thing everyone else said...nothing sugary.....no oatmeal, fruit, fruit juice, burger and fries, etc. I ate a scrambled egg with cheese and mushrooms the morning of. The stuff to drink did taste like orange crush. They prick your finger before the test to make sure your didn't have a high result to begin with....I had an 80, which was low. However, I ended up failing the 1 hr. For the 3 hr, I had to fast 12 hours before my test and have nothing.....not even water!!!! I ended up failing that one too. I had 3 other pregnancies (all singletons) and never had GD but now with the twins I do. The only factor I have against me, is that diabeties runs in my family. I am seeing a nutritionist on Thursday to help control it and I have to test my blood 4 times a day. Good luck to you. Most likely you won't have it but if you do, this is not the worst thing that can happen during a twin pregnancy, so just try to eat right and relax!!! Good luck!

Prior to the test, I'd say eat a protein (egg) with a carb (whole grain toast), don't drink juice! Drink water or something unsweetened.

But don't listen to me! :) I've failed the test before, and I've had to go on the GD diet. (Didn't have to do insulin, thankfully.) It really was a good thing to go on the diet. I did have to prick my finger three times daily, but even that was worth it. My weight gain was steadied by the diet. My baby was a healthy weight. And I actually had more energy and felt better on the diet. I even lost the postpartum weight quicker! Plus, I learned more about how EVERYBODY ought to be eating more healthfully it - not just those with GD or diabetes.

When I was counseled by the dietician/nutrititionist, she told me all kinds of stories about how Americans eat so horribly and don't know how to eat. She said she sees CHILDREN under the age of 10 increasingly coming into her office and having to be treated for Type II diabetes and being overweight!! We eat way too much sugar. Way too many carbs without thinking. We don't understand proportions. We have no clue what we are doing to wreck our bodies. And many of us will develop Type II diabetes later in life if we do not learn how to eat right. Having gone through the GD and all really caused me to rethink my own habits and change the way my family eats.

Strange as it sounds, it was worth being diagnosed so that I could be healthier.
The dietician/nutritionist told me that she thinks EVERYONE ought to have to go through such counseling. I agree - whether they have to prick their fingers or not.

Don't be afraid of the test and any diagnosis. It's really not the end of the world as some people would have you believe.
