I'm sorry I don't have any sugeestions, but am looking forward to the replies!
My twins will be about a year and a half this Christmas.
I was in Toys R Us yesterday just looking around for ideas, and I was so upset that I couldn't find anything I felt would be suitable for this age! I kept imagining them either throwing something hard around and getting hurt, or chewing on the pieces...

We're getting our girls a play kitchen for Christmas, they'll be 21 months old.

What they like right now (they just turned 18 months):
    wood puzzles
    mega blocks (big legos)
    riding on their push toy
FP Laugh and Learn house (have loved this for along time)
    sit and spin
    balls
    tunnel

I know they'd love the kitchen right now too, I just have to be patient and wait until Christmas. :)

Already have 2 little people etch a sketches. They love their big sisters, but too many small pieces for them yet. This one has larger pieces.

We're getting the girls power wheels from Santa, so that will be their big present. They are also getting the mini-doodle pads from grandma. Don't know about stocking stuffers yet.

    GL!!

The play kitchen sounds perfect. We don't have one yet but at playgroups they love it.
Both DS and DD also love the play workshop with tools and it's age appropriate.

Mine love megablocks, rideons/push alongs, and are starting to work on puzzles with large pieces. We also have a toy wheelbarrow anddoll stroller that they like.

I'm looking forward to seeing these replies! Mine will be 20 mos at Christmas & I'm already thinking of ideas (stocking stuffers too!) Here's some so far:

    stocking stuffers:

    bath toys
    bubble baths/crayons
    night light/flash light
    stickers
    socks
    spinning tops
    small stuffed animal
    ornament for the tree

    gifts:

    puzzles
    blocks
new baby doll & bottles for dd
    dvd's
    books
Learning Piggy Bank by Fisher Price
    toy bowling set
    Little People sets

I actually started a wish list for them with Amazon, so that as I browse stuff & see things I think they might like I can add it to the list.....so I don't forget. :) I can email you the list, if you want to pm me.

I read your title too quickly. I thought it said, "WANT to buy 1.5 y/o for Christmas?"

I was thinking, poor thing, she must be having a bad week!

My girls were 19 months old last Christmas and the big thing we got them was a Wagon wagon. They loved it! I think it was their favorite thing that they got. Other things that they really liked that they got were lots of board books, Princess Mega Blocks, Leap Frog Fridge DJ Radio and Leap Frog Fridge Farm, Little People Farm and Little People Noah's Ark, Plush Barneys that sing and Barney DVDS. They didn't play much with the dolls we got them (Baby Stella, with their names on their outfit) or their Wooden Bead Maze Activity thingy. Hope this helps! Good Luck Shopping!

Mine did not start playing with dolls until about 18 months, so we didn't get them any last Christmas (when they were 1 yr), but had to buy a couple this summer. They are also suddenly into stuffed animals, which they could not have cared less about until about 20 months.

Their favorite toys from last Christmas were the Parents Magazine Mirror Pound a Ball (that is a really weird name, but just google it and you'll find it) and the LeapFrog Magnetic Fridge Farm. They played with the fridge farm right away at 12 months, but are still going strong at 22 months. They didn't even figure out the Pound a Ball until 18 months, so yours would not be too old for it.

They are also just getting into vehicles, especially big ones that they can push around the floor and walk behind. (Not quite as large as a push toy, but maybe 12" long.) School buses, airplanes, ambulances, trucks of various kinds, etc. (And yes, girls can be into trucks too!)

Amy's absolute favorite thing right now is a doll-sized stroller. She pushes it all around the house and puts everything in it -- dolls, stuffed animals, tupperware, books, shoes.... (Sarah would love it too, if Amy ever let her have a turn.) They are also into little wagons -- not the kind for them to ride in but the kind for them to pull by themselves.

Hope this gives you some more ideas!

Some of the favorite toys we bought at that age were ones that have been mentioned but I'll list their favorites:

    1. Step 2 Kitchen
Lakeshore has some great kitchen accessories and my mom went as far as speaking to a manager because of all the recent recalls: The store manager at Lakeshore Learning said, "All their products are "rigorously tested" since they cater to pre-school children. She said, "They have no lead in them."

    2. Grocery cart/Baby Stroller: They love loading it up and hanging bags on the handles of the stroller like mommy.

    3. Sturdy table and chair set; great for coloring, play dough, all art activities.

    4. Easel: We received this one as a gift and really like the sturdiness of it and the fact that it is white erase, chalk, and magnetic on the white side. Since magnetic letters with magnets on the back can fall out and get ingested we use the magnetic letters from the Leap Frog Word Whammer.

A couple smaller items they still really enjoy are floor puzzles, Doodle Pro with the Magnetic shapes.
    Hope that helps!
