At least 3 times in the last week, dd has thrown up in her crib when she should be taking her afternoon nap. The first time we thought she gagged herself by accident. But now, I'm not so sure. Can she actually be doing this on purpose for attention? How do I get this to stop. I am worried and frustrated.

Before answering just a few other things fyi:
she also takes her pants off when she can in her crib
she is sick right now with a cold and ear infection but this started before she was sick I think

You poor thing!! It stinks!!! My little Jack did this for about 2 weeks!! And then it just stopped. Both boys had a really croupy cough- and Jack has always had the weaker stomach. Paul did it about 3 times in those 2 weeks- Jack at least once a day!! It was awful- but always related to getting upset or bad coughing spell. I looked up the croup in their ped. book and it said with the croup vomiting is likely with all the mucus they are producing. My family kept saying Jack needed to go to the dr. but they never had a fever or seemed sick except the ugly cough and vomiting. They drank, ate etc. well throughout and played like crazy still. It ran its course and was done. Anyhow that was our experience. When my dd was little she would get extremely upset when we put her to bed and screamed until she threw up. After a few times of getting cleaned up and put back to bed- it stopped. She still thinks it is unfair she is the only one who has to sleep by herself! She still, at 8, wants the big light on in her room- but that is another story....
Hopefully, the throwing up is related to her being sick and goes away very soon for you!!!
    take care,
    Lanie

Addison does it accidentally sometimes and gags herself but she has not actually vomited. I would not think she is doing it on purpose for attention at this age -I would think that it is either an accident like if she cries to be gotten out of bed and sticks her hand in her mouth (which is what Addison does!) or from sinus drainage or do you feed them lunch and put them down for a nap soon afterwards -could she have reflux? :unknw:
it would be nice to have something like an ear thermometer but that you could get a reading like "I am doing this for attention" or "my tummy hurts".

My older two used to do it when they cried too hard. Naptime and timeouts was when the puking would happen, like a big I'll show you scenario. I started making them clean it up themselves and then take the time out.

Trevor made himself vomit in his crib a couple times so he could paint with it (on the occasions when he couldn't generate a poop for this purpose). He was also gagging himself when he'd get done eating if I wasn't quick enough removing him from his highchair. I changed the sheets & his clothes quickly and quietly and put him back in telling him it was time for his nap. There were many missed or short naps and I'm thankful the vomiting phase was BEFORE the shift to one nap.

Honestly, ignoring the forced vomiting behavior seemed the most effective deterrent. He stopped after a couple of weeks and no problems since. The poop paintings are infrequent now as well although those took much, much longer to stop and required a ton of intervention. I hope you don't have both issues.

Ilyse, I hope it stops soon!!! Could be part of the cold, but sounds like habit forming to me a bit. I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL, HOWEVER..... Doesn't cost a thing to CALL the pedi.

I would just put 3 or 4 layers of sheets on your crib and when she does it you can just whip one off and be done with it!

Did both thanks. The pedi chalked it up to her being sick now. If it continues past that, then I will definitely call again. And absolutely layers of sheets and the waterproof protector things!!!!

Oh my, I hope it will not come to that. They always have a body suit or onesie on so fortunately they can't get to the diaper right now. But soon enough they will be able to (when they get bigger and bodysuits are not available in their size) and I am not looking forward to that. The funny thing is, she only does it for her afternoon nap and it was not everyday. It was like one day last week and then Sunday and Monday. So hopefully today will go better.
