So school's out here. We've been in the high 80's and I've noticed that there are no kids to be found playing outside. We've had roofers working on our house for the past week and I didn't want the kids out with the nails and stuff being thrown off the roof during the day. But in the evenings, we'd go on bike rides and be the only ones out. We went and played mini-golf at 10 in the morning and were the only ones there. I'm guessing the excuse I would here is the heat because we are a little hotter than normal for June. We're a neighborhood with tons of kids and I haven't seen kids around.

I guess I should add that we try and get outside in the morning and evenings. I try and plan inside things for the heat of the day. But we always try and get outside and just enjoy popsicles when we're done. I gauge more off of how the kids are handling things than the thermometer.

There has to be a heat advisory before I'll say they can't play in the sun at all. As it gets hotter, I just have them play in the shade as much as possible or stay in the water. We do have a pool, so that helps. But, even without that, I'd have them in a little pool or turn the sprinklers on. As long as they are in the water, we go out when there are heat advisories, too.

Do a lot of dual or single parents work in your area??

I know when school is out--many many kids do day camp, summer school, etc because of parent work schedules.

We get out as much as we can- if it is hot we get out the hose, but at the top heat of the day we have 'rest time' from 2-3 ish and stay in the cool house.

Our neighborhood is hopping from 5-7 pm or so with kids on bikes, in yards, etc. Most kids are involved in other things before that since many many famikies here have both or the single parents work full time.

80's and people arent outside? Thats crazy! It has hit the 90's and will stay well over until the end of August now for us... My kids can play outside as long as its under 100. They are usually in the kiddie pool or slip and slide anyway.... But it has to be above the 60's for us to play outside in the winter. :D

I'm wimpy & my girls are wimpy....if it is over 83-85 we stay inside unless we are in the pool. I never go to parks or playscapes when it is hot, unless they are completely shaded. We go to indoor tracks & gyms to ride bikes, skate, scooter. We go to the climbing wall & the bouncy castle place, and to open gym at the gymnastics school. Not to mention, the girls run up & down the stairs & through the house all day. The past 2 days all my couch cushions have been on the stairs - the girls build al kinds of slide formations - there is plenty of exercise in the A.C.

In the winter.....we don't go outside once it hits 60.

If the weather isn't thunder and lightning or tornado watches (like yesterday), my kids are outside no matter what the temp. If its too hot we will be at my sister's house playing with the hose/sprinkler/mud/kiddie pool, or we go to the my parents summer place on a lake. The kids get in the water and its usually bedtime before we can get them out.

Rain doesn't usually stop me from sending them outside (they aren't always fond of it, but hey, make mommy annoyed and this is the consequence). We play outside in the snow and cold as well. Below zero just shortens the time outside.

We tend to go out in the morning befor it gets too hot. But we also have crazy humidity to deal with. Right now our temps are 90 with a heat index over 100. So I do make sure we are inside during the heat of the day. We go back outside afer dinner and stay until the bugs get too bad. (I do use bug spray, but when they swarm it's just gross.)
In the winter I don't really care. It doesn't get all that cold down here compared to many other places, so we just put jackets on and play.

Heat doesn't stop us. We live in TX so we just have to suck it up and be sure to drink lots of water. We're also spending lots of time at the pool.

For us its not the heat .. its the humidity ! I dont mind heat .. in fact I love it .. but the humidity I can do without. On days where its unbearable we either stay indoors or hop in the pool. :)

Hey Molly, next time you guys are too hot you should come here and take a dip with us !

In the summer, we go out when it is well into the 90s. I'd probably even take them out for short periods in hotter than that as long as we had shade available and lots of water to drink. In the winter, I like it to be at least 25 for us to go outside. This post is making me laugh a little because you can tell where people live and what temps they are used to by their posts.
