I posted this here because while im not here yet i figured that you guys would know,
So im trying to get an idea of what sizes of onesies to get but i dont' want to get too much either.. Im gunna get them a premie going home outfits, but im wondering if or how long they will need them at home?? Do they generally eventually catch up and are in 0-3 mon?? Most of the onesies that ive gotten are 0-3 month but im kinda really lost when it comes to what sizes to buy..

My 38w DD is Feb 8th so im trying to think about spring and such...

    Thanks in Advance..

My dd is still wearing newborn onesies. Ds wears both newborn and some 3 month old stuff. They wore preemie clothes for a little over a month. Ds was 4lb 11 and Dd was 4lb 7oz at birth. It depends on their weight when they are born. You may or may not need preemie clothes. It's good to have them, just keep the tags on them until you know.

mine grew out of preemie stuff at around 2 1/2 months actual (but they were 30weekers). they were in NB sizes for about a month, and then we moved into 0-3 month size at 3 months. now at 5 1/2 months DS is in 3-6 size, and DD is in 6-9 size. good luck!

I have found that the 0-3 month stuff is big at first...I was better off using NB clothing and we're just switching into the 0-3 month stuff at their 2 month mark. DD is smaller, but is transitioning into the 0-3 month clothes pretty well...they're a little baggy, but she looks fine.

Same here...they were in preemie clothes for the first month, then newborn. The 0-3 stuff had to be rolled up a ton and anything with feet looked crazy, like you could tie the legs together and they wouldn' know it b/c their feet weren't anywhere near the bottom! DD is still able to wear newborn or 0-3 (and they'll be 3 months this week - still rolling the sleeves for her, too), DS is pretty much just in 0-3 now. We didn't expect them to fit preemie sizes b/c my last u/s had them at over 6 lbs each, but they were actually only about 5 lbs each at birth! We brought them home in REALLY baggy newborn outfits (that they finally outgrew this week...they wore them one last time on Monday ;) ) and then I sent DH out to get some preemie t-shirts and sleepers...we didn't do onesies until after the umb stump fell out. I agree w/ pp - just wash a few things to get started and keeptags/receipts! GL!!

We had one preemie outfit... We bought those NB Gerber 3 packs of sleepers and they're actually shorter than the regular NB size so lasted us a while... with some newborn clothes. They were too big, but the babies were swaddled all the time, so it didn't really matter. DS was out of newborn clothes at 1.5 month, DD at 2.5.

My babies were 5lbs 8oz and 5lbs 4oz. They were in preemie stuff until about 4 weeks. They are now in nb but I'm feeling like it wont last too long!
Oh, when you have your babies dont forget to keep trying the next size clothing...my nephew actually skipped a size because his mom just didnt try the 0-3 month stuff.

My best advice is to get sleepers with zippers for the first few months (or nightgowns, but I found that putting them over their head is more annoying than putting a sleeper on). Baby clothes with snaps are the worst invention ever made.

Then once it's warmer, onesies. My babies pretty much lived in sleepers the first three months and onesies until recently. Just buy one or two outfits for going out, you probably won't need a ton, and frankly when they're little you'll probably want to keep a blanket over them in the infant seat anyway so nobody will see their outfits... Once it's warmer, and if you like going out a lot, I found that 4 'outside' outfits per baby is a good number.

Check ebay also... there are a TON of lots for newborn-3 months clothes for dirt cheap... probably less than $1 the outfit.

Just looking back at the money I could have saved...

Now I always hate the ones with zippers--you have to take the whole sleeper off to change the diaper! I like the ones that snap down both legs best.

Mine outgrew newborn within a couple of weeks, 0-3 by two months and I can just barely snap the 3-6 months now at 3 months. But mine were 40-weekers and pretty big for twins, I understand. (They're growing about the same as their older siblings, though.)

The best advice is not to get too much, keep the tags on, and wait to see what you like and how fast they grow.

I just unzip it and slide the legs out. No need to take the arms out. I just find it faster to slide the legs back in and rezip than having to think about aligning snaps when it's the middle of the night (or later, with a wiggly baby).

Yep. Me too. It's hard to get the leg out that isn't on the side with the zipper.

As far as onesies go, it also sort of depends on what brand you buy. I found the Gerber ones to run small. I can't really help you on sizes since my girls are nearly 10 months old and still wearing 3-6 month clothes. It's so hard to guess sizes.

I think it's worth having a few preemie outfits. My twins are just starting to fit into newborn size.

My little ones never wore preemie sizes. They started in newborn and wore them for probably 3 weeks. And than they went straight into 0-3 months.

I bough t shirts in size newborn...long and short sleeve but I did not buy any onesies because I figured by the time their belly button fell off, they would be in 0-3 onesies....
I put them in sleepers for the first month, around-the-clock. So make sure you have 6-8 newborn size sleepers!

We never wore preemie sizes. Joel was 6#5oz and Roe was 5#13oz at birth, but came home in newborn sizes. Then, for the first month, they lived in the longsleeved tshirts from the hospital (we had about 50 of them) with the cuffs that fold over the hands, and swaddling blankets around the legs.

They started wearing 0-3s right at the beginning too, and wore those until just about 3 months. On tops, they've been right at the size that corresponds to their age, but on bottoms I buy one size up because we cloth diaper and I need a bigger rise over that fluffy bum.

Honestly, I'd skip the preemie onesies. Mine never wore them and weren't in NB long. If they end up needing them, you can have someone buy a few for you. Buy some newborn, but mostly 0-3 months and 3-6 months. Buy stuff that works for any season because we planned poorly and ended up with fall/winter stuff that was the sizes they needed for the summer.

Edit: I just saw that your 38 week mark is right where mine was. Mine were born on Feb. 3 this year. Like I said, just watch buying ahead too much because it's hard to not get the sizes wrong. And then mine were really different size-wise. Jack has been steadily about 3 pounds bigger than Anna, so he's usually in a larger size altogether. Honestly, I wouldn't buy much ahead if I had it to do over again, and what I did buy would be pretty much all short sleeve onesies, knit pants, and sleepers (I recommend sleep sacks and zip up as opposed to button sleepers).

My boys were born at 36 weeks and were 6lbs12oz and 6lbs8oz, both 19 1\2 inches. They came home in newborn size onesies, their little shorts weren't even close to fitting so they came home without pants on (but it was over 90 that day so it was okay). My problem with the preemie clothes was that they were too short in the body and sleepers were too short in the legs. So they wore newborn stuff from the very begining. The onesies were big on them but we survived. The sleepers that I LOVED in the begining were the Gerber ones with the zippers, they seemed smaller than most of our newborn stuff and fit the boys better. They just started wearing 0-3 month at 12 weeks when I went back to work. Most of the onesies fit okay, but some of the pants are still a little long. I had to switch them though because almost all their newborn stuff was summery and even a lot of their 0-3 stuff they will never wear because it is too cold now (mostly stuff I got as gifts). I have found resale and mom-to-mom sales to be my friend since I know they will be growing out of stuff quickly, but I needed stuff with long sleeves.

On the zipper vs. snap issue, I think it is mostly personal preference. I personally like the zipper because sometimes if they wiggle enough the snaps come undone. I also like the zipper better at night because I don't have to line the snaps up when I am only half awake. My pet peeve is that you can find a lot more patterns in the snap kind (of carter's at least) than the zipper. Even looking at Kohl's, BRU and many other places I can always find more patterns in the snap kind.

I just had to comment that I love that you are also a Rachel and have a Jack! :)

LOL, I feel the same way! I swear I spent an hour at the clothing store the other day trying to find zippered pajamas...I kept finding really cute snap ones, of course - but HATE snaps! Such a pain.

Gerber has a newborn (just born?) size of onesie that was perfect for the first few weeks, especially for my DD who stayed small longer than my DS. They were narrower through the body. I got them at Target (all my other onesies were Carters brand, and it took a while to grow into them, even the newborn size).
