what size diapers did you buy when your babies were born and when did you go size up?

Ladies, hope i can post my ? here. I am trying to prepare and stock the nursery in advance and was wondering what size diapers to get for starters (i assume preemies since twins average 5-6 lbs at birth) and how long i can use them before buying a larger size (in other words, how quickly do twins gain weight and outgrow preemies?)

I am having boy/girl if this is relevant. Also, any recommendations on brands/names and places to buy would be much appreciated!

We loved the pampers swaddlers when they were newborns. I wouldn't get too many preemie diapers - I think my girls wore preemie size for 2 weeks total (and that's only b/c we happened to have some - they could have just worn the newborn size). They stayed in newborn size for a couple of months and then also only wore size 1 for a short time. I had way too many size 1 diapers, I wound up giving a lot of size 1's away.

I would wait and see if people give you diapers and what size they give you. I had several people give me diapers at my showers and they were all size 1.

my babies were pretty good size 5 lb 14 oz and 6 lb 12 oz and they wore preemie for the first 3 weeks or so and then went to newborn for another 3-4 weeks and just now am into size 1 for the past 3 weeks or so

In the hospital we were supplied with diapers. OUr twins were mid 7 lb range and wore newborn size for a bit. If you buy diapers ahead of time, just make sure to save the receipt & don't open them. We used (and liked) huggies. When they were older we switched to a generic brand (Member's mark). My last baby was born big and we skipped newborn size completely. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! Enjoy it!

We used newborn for about a month then switched to size 1. Never used preemie. The hospital gave us a few packs too, so I don't think we had to buy any. Personally I don't buy named brands, I find that most generic work just as well and you save so much money in the long run. If you have a Costco or BJs around, their diapers are good and pretty cheap, or I use Target, but I've had leaks in those.

I wouldn't even buy preemie diapers. The hospital here just uses newborn also. My girls were 5'15" and 5'12" when they were born. We love the Pampers Swaddlers. ALso, if you do get to many of one size at showers, which we did, Babies R Us was really good about taking them back and letting us exchange them. We took $200 worth of diapers back and just go store credit and used that for diapers as we needed them. I had 3 showers and at 2 of them everyone brought diapers in addition to their gifts so that really helped.

I would start with maybe 1 or 2 packs of preemies... you will get LOTS of diapers in the hospital. Otherwise, I would go with newborns. I found that I really do like Luv's the best. I do buy Huggies here and there, but Luv's really does work well and are cheaper than others. I don't like some of the generics. I found they don't work as well and I was changing more often with them... so it's not really a money saver. My babies were 6lbs and almost 8lbs when born. I have been in size 2 diapers for the last 2 months. I guess I went through about 2 packs a week? But that was me.

FYI, as for wipes... I really like the Target brand of cleansing wipes. They are in a purple package. They are the generic for Lansinoh. They are super mild and will keep your little ones from getting "burnt" from the wipes when changing them. I even had the type for newborns from huggies and they still made my little one's red. Also... at walgreen's they have this spray called gentle mist. It's in the incontinence isle. It works awesome for diaper rash. Great preventative too. I like it because it clears it up right away and you don't have to touch sore bottoms!!! You just spray and go! My babies have had 1 case of diaper rash and it was from the wipes! That is in almost 5 months!!!!!

Good luck and see you in 1st year soon!

We loved the swaddlers, too, but they can be expensive. And to add to the wipes that pp said, Walmart brand nonscented is all we ever bought. You can get a huge amount (800 I think) for a great price. Our girls were so sensitive but the unscented Walmart brand never bothered them.

My twins were 4lb10oz and 5lbs2oz. They both lost weight in the beginning. They were in preemie diapers for quite a while. In fact at first preemie diapers were even too big for them. Ellie was in preemie diapers for the first two and a half months. Will was in preemies for at least a month and a half. Will went into size one diapers at 4 months and is now is size 2 at almost 6 months. Ellie was in newborns until 5 1/2 months and just barely went up to size 1.

We love Huggies here. Pampers Swaddlers are good. I don't care for most other diapers because they don't stretch. Pampers Baby Dry Flex fit (or something like that) are good because they stretch. But mostly we stick with Huggies. I haven't found a generic brand that stretch. (Actually I think Costco's generic brand do but I can't remember. We don't have a Costco card. Someone gave us a box at our baby shower)

    Good Luck to you!!

    Mine were 6.3 and 5.13
They wore Newborn Swaddlers when they were born/came home. I am now using up the last of the Newborn size to move up to size 1. My boy is already using the 1's whereas my petite daughter is getting the last of the N's.

I did what you are doing... when i found sales or had coupons i would buy diapers. I use pampers.... and started with newborn size right away... i think i had 2-3 boxes... I also got a couple size 1 and 2. as PP said, keep the receipts. I bought most of my diapers at babies R us, and exchanged all unopened boxes for bigger sizes with no problem. did the same for wipes... bought when on sale. BTW my son was 7lbs 5oz when he was born and outgrew newborn size in 2 weeks!

My girls were 4lbs 12oz and 5lbs 3oz. They used Pampers Swaddlers Newborn size at hospital and at home for a while. We tried Huggies, but for us they leaked. Others have already said this, but I would say just keep your receipts. We continued to use Swaddlers thru size 3 and then started using Pampers Baby Dry.

Pampers Swaddlers Newborn size here. DD was 5.5 lbs and DS was 7 lbs. They were in them for probably a month.

I bought pamper swaddlers and huggies in newborn I have a ton of them so we are using them, but they are almost a month and they are still a little big on them if they are not on exactly right pee comes right out the diaper <_< Lets just say I change my clothes about three times a day! I would not get too many preemie size, but think about it you will use them all eventually anyway!

Ditto on the Pampers Swaddlers - they're great. I had boy/girl twins, 5'10 and 6'6 at birth, and my DD was in preemie and then newborn swaddlers for at least 12 weeks. She was itty bitty, though (took forever to start gaining weight properly)...I imagine most babies would grow out of newborn-sized diapers within the first month. I think my DS was in size 1s by the time he was 6 weeks old or so.

I found that different brands are sized and/or fit differently. Huggies and Luvs seemed to run a bit larger than the Pampers for the same size.

I had b/g, and they were 5lb7oz and 4lb13oz at birth, and each lost almost a whole pound. They used NBs in the hospital, but when we came home, we had some preemies, so used them...only 2 packs, then went back to NBs. I like the Pampers Swaddlers best, and the sensitive ones are good, cause they have a yellow stripe on them that turns green when they are wet! That's what they had at the hospital. Huggies are good too, but I still like the Swaddlers better, though they seem a little smaller?? So I used all my packs of Pampers first, and now are into our Huggies (we got TONS of NBs at our shower, plus quite a few 1s and a few 2s). They are still in the Huggies NBs, with plenty of room to spare, and each weighed 7lbs on Wednesday.

we use pampers 99% of the time.
We started with Swaddlers - that is what the had at the hospital and what they gave us. They were great. we were in newborn size for weeks and weeks. My girls were 5lbs14oz and 5lbs15oz at birth.

Now we are using Pampers Baby Dry for several reasons. Huggies leak, Baby Dry cost the same as swaddlers here at BRU and you get more in the box. The only diapers I will say I will never use again is generics - we were given some from our neighbors and they were terrible.

My girls were both 5 lbs. 1 1/2 oz. and they wore preemie for just a few weeks, then newborn for a good month or so and now they are almost 7 mo. and in size 4's (plenty of room to grow though). We haven't had to buy any diapers because we stocked up when I was pg.

My girls were 3lbs 9oz and 3lbs 14 and we never did use preemie diapers. The hospital just used newborn and we continued to use when we got home. They were in Newborn diapers for around 3 months. We used all our diapers from the shower and then went with Target/Walmart diapers and have never had a problem

Ditto! My babies were just over 4lbs and the nicu used newborns. We just switched to size 1. You'll know to switch b/c they get too small. Oh, we use swaddlers..love them. I would definitely get a case or two of the newborn size...you'll use them up quick.

Don't bother with preemies. They're more expensive and newborns will work just fine. When we brought Sierra home at 3 lb 11 oz, I was expecting to buy preemie diapers but the nurses told me they'd just been using newborn size. That little bit of info saved me a lot of money. :) Ainsley was 5 lb 1 oz when she came home and she also fit just fine in newborn diapers.

We used newborn size for 1-2 months. Get yourself a couple of packages of size 1s as well so you have them on hand when the babies switch sizes.
