Since the girls are starting preschool, I have to get them a backpack. But, I really don't know what size to get. Should I get them a preschool size backpack, or just a smaller backpack?

I'm getting them from pottery barn (I bought my son one from there years ago after going through three backpacks and it's still in great condition)...I'm leaning towards just the small so they can keep using them through elementary school, but I just can't decide. The preschool one would fit them better, but I'm thinking..do I go with what fits them now knowing they won't be putting much stuff in it, or with what they can use for longer. They could possibly still get two years use out of the preschool one..but I just don't know.

    What do you think?

The requirements for the boys preschool is just that it is big enough to fit a folder in. They had it for last year preschool and will have it for this year preschool. I will have to get them a bigger one for kindergarten.

It looks like the one they have is a tad bigger that PB preschool and a tad smaller than the PB small. I would get the small for them. The preschool one will be too small to include their folder, snack and other things they will have to put in their kindergarten things in.

THIS is the one they have.

I would definitely big enough to bring home any work or artwork that they might do at school without having to fold it or bend it, so I would probably go with the small.

Does the school require a backpack? My kids went to 2 different preschools and in both cases, were given tot bags to bring stuff home in. At one school, they gave them a cloth grocery bag. The other school gave them bags with the school name/logo. It is much easier for the teachers to load a tot vs. backpack. If this is just something you want to get them, I would get the small one vs. preschool.

They won't be given anything to bring home their stuff in, so yes they will need a backpacks. I wish their preschool would supply totes!!

Do you need to send an extra outfit with them in case of potty accidents? If so, I'd consider the small backpack and not the toddler size. That's what I plan to do when my girls go to preschool in December.

ETA: Just realized your girls are significantly older than mine, so they probably aren't having potty accidents anymore. :)

The Pottery Barn ones are really cute but I didn't see them until I purchased some from The Children's Place. They have two sizes at The Children's Place and the smaller one fits a folder (we actually tested a binder from the store). We decided to get the larger ones since mine are going to K but the smaller one would have been perfect for preschool. Someone recommended them to me and they were on sale today for $10 each.
