What kind of milk are your 2yr and older kids on? We had our 4yr well check today and the little informational paper said this:

"Daily milk should be about 16 oz. Lowfat milk (skim or 1%) is recommended for children 2 years and older. 2% milk is not considered low fat milk."

I'm so confused. We switched to 2% when they turned 2. Are we the only ones or are you all on 2% as well?

We use 1% milk for our kids. We just switched Liam last week and the twins stayed on whole milk until they were 3 (because they were so small, my own decision). When our kids turned 2, the doctor said to give them whatever the rest of the family drinks.

mine are still on whole milk - due to their size and we'll probably switch to 2% when they turn 3

as far as what the rest of us drink - we don't drink milk!

We just recently (in the last few weeks) switched from organic whole milk to organic 2% milk. I do not believe in giving a child low fat milk. I believe it is the latest "hype" b/c of all the obese children/adults now a days.

Well size is not an issue for us. As you can see from their stats in my siggy they are big kids. Maybe I should switch them to 1%.

We are still on whole milk here because they are on the smaller side(my decision), but, my other kids had switched to skim by now.

Mine are on 2% as well.

My 8 year old drinks 1% with us, we switched her at age 5 to 1% from 2%.

When J turns 2, we'll put him on 2% which is what DH and I drink. B's still on formula for protein problems... though whenever he CAN have milk (which I hope happens sometime soon!) I'll probably keep him on whole for awhile. He's a skinny little guy.

At our two year appt, our pedi recommended switching to skim milk. They are on the bigger side too. (They drank whole milk from ages 1-2.)

Wow! I hadn't even contemplated that yet. I guess since mine still only weigh what the average 8 month old weighs, we will keep them on pediasure and whole milk for quite a bit longer. My older boys drank soy milk at that age. DH and I drink skim milk. I wouldn't be able to palette anything else.

K&M drink 2% at our pedi's recommendation. We all drink 2%.

I like 2% but if I happen to pick up 1% nobody seems to mind. My doctor told me I could switch from whole milk at 18 months because my boys are a good size.

I talked to the pedi about this at their recent 2 yr appt. and he pretty much gave me the go ahead to keep them on whole milk if I wanted to. The main reason I even asked was because of all the talk about switching at age two. Yogurt we still switch between whole milk and lowfat, just for more flavor options.

But on the rare occasion that DH and I drink milk it's whole milk and that's what we cook with too. So I really didn't want a bunch of different milk types in there if it wasn't really necessary. I grew up drinking whole milk and my cholesterol is great and my weight's fine too. I choose other areas to watch my fat consumption, I think whole milk tastes better!

Mine have been drinking 2% since they switched from formula. Ours would not drink whole milk after much trying. I have not heard any different from my pedi.

2% here! We weren't told different at their 3rd yr. appt. I'll probably switch to skim after this appt. simply because then we'll all use the same milk!!!

All of my kids are still on whole milk. They dont get much fat in their diet so I figure the milk fat is good fat for them.

We were told at their 2 yr. appt. to keep them on 2% until the 3 year checkup and we will reevaluate at that time.

My pedi stated that it's not only for body growth but they need the fat for (I think?) brain development also. I forget exactly what he said  . Does that sound right to anyone?

Anywho...if we get the okay, we will switch them to 1% at 3.

I remember hearing something about that too Michelle.

I was told to switch my girls to skim milk at either their 2 year or 3 year check up. I don't remember. But I give them 1% milk but on the days that they are in the mood to drink milk they drink more then 16 ounces. But there are days they don't even drink 4 ounces of milk.

My kids have switched at a variety of times. DD didn't get off whole milk until she was a lot older (maybe 6ish). Her and Nathan went to 2% at that time, where William and Brandon were on whole milk. William needs all the calories we can get in him, whereas Nathan not so much. I want to say about the time Brandon turned 2 we switched Brandon and William off the whole. We will never intentionally give our kids less than 2% because neither DH nor I would be able to stomach it to try and convince them it tasted good :bad: .

My pediatrician never said to switch, so I haven't. We're still on whole milk here. I don't they recommended we switch because my two, especially my dd, are on the thinner side. :pardon:

DH, Annie, and I drink 1% and that's what I usually buy. Ellie and Jo I'm not quite sure about. We get powdered milk and evaporated milk from a program similar to WIC. They drink a combo of whole milk (reconstituted evap. milk) and lowfat (reconstituted powered milk) so I'll guess it's about 2%? But Ellie is such a peanut that she probably needs the fat.

We also switched to 2% (at the ped's recommendation) when they turned 2. He didn't say to switch to anything else when they turned 3. We buy skim for DH and me, and 2% for the girls. I wouldn't mind switching to 1% for everybody, but DH prefers skim (goodness knows why).

We switched down to 2% after they turned two, then skim when they turned three. We just got tired of buying two different milks.

Still on whole milk here. My doctor said that was fine (my daughter is small though). They drink a lot of chocolate milk so that is actually reduced fat. I drink whole milk and refuse to buy extra milk (except for the chocolate).

Ours are more on the "small" side and drink organic whole milk. Our pedi had said to continue with the whole milk when we went to their 2 year appointment. We will ask if we should switch to 2% or 1% at their 3 year appointment.

We have been on 2% since we switched. I feel comfortable with giving them that since they are average weight. One is 50% and the other is a little over 5% which is what they have been since birth. I did not realize that 2% wasn't considered lowfat!

I'm going to ask my pedi to see what she says.

I will switch them to 2%. I would never put them lower than that because I wouldn't drink it myself. Might as well drink water - IMO. :D
