What kind of excercise is okay?

I've been reading a couple of twin pregnancy books and can't seem to find anything about acceptable exercise when pregnant with twins.

When I've been pregnant before I could do pretty much do my regular routine of group classes, elliptical, walking, light weight lifting etc. as long as I didn't push myself too hard. With so much talk about PTL in twin pregnancy though, I'm nervous doing much of anything. I plan to ask my doc about it, but my appt isn't until next week.

Are the guidelines the same as with singleton pregnancies (unless of course you have signs of PTL)?

Im allowed to walk and swim. Thats about it. Walking is REALLY hard to do now, so I stick to the swimming. Hubby and I do it together, just incase something goes wrong

I think it's probably best to talk with your doc(s) and see what they're comfortable for you as their patient.

I know there are lots of moms on here who weren't able to do hardly anything (even some singleton moms I know). But then there's me who played co-ed softball until I was 18 weeks along and then took a prenatal pool class. But in both instances I cleared it with my docs.

My OB requested that I do no kind of exercise except the walking that I did from my car to my classroom. Of course, I had bleeding issues, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. I would agree with pp, ask your doc, many differ on this but twins are high risk, so you should be careful whatever you decide to do. Water aerobics is very low impact and probably some of the best exercise you can get, but ask your OB first.

    Thanks fro your replies ladies!

I'm not sure I have the energy anyway, but sometimes a little exercise can help with that. I just know that since I quit working out when I had morning sickness (I haven't ever started again) that I get out of breath when I do even the littlest things like walking up a half flight of stairs. That doesn't seem healthy to me.

I will ask my doc before I do anything though.

I would ask your doctor to be safe. Mine was okay with me swimming, water aerobics, and walking. Until I had my emergency cerclage at 16 weeks, then I was on bedrest.

This sounds like me. I think I got so out of shape while I had morning sickness, that it really affected my energy and endurance levels, even when I started to feel good. I asked my Dr what kind of exercise I can do and she said walking, and mild lo-impact exercises like pregnancy yoga. I haven't been able to get out and walk much, but I have been doing some stretches and squats, and I think that has helped.

I asked my doctor today if it was okay to exercise, and he said he would rather I didn't. I asked him specifically about walking and he said it would be okay, but to make sure I could carry on a conversation, and that I wasn't breathing very hard.

I think I'll just go ahead and freeze my gym membership. Darn....like I needed a good excuse to be lazy anyway :winking:

My dr. said whatever I felt comfortable with just don't over excert yourself and make sure you drink plenty of water. I did do mostly the elipitical until I was 24weeks. After that I just didn't feel comfortable anymore because I had to go really slow and got out of breath in no time.
