What kind of Dr should I take her to? Derm, Plastic Surgeon?

Sydney had quite an ordeal on her 2nd birthday. She fell and impaled herself (just below her eye) with a blue crayon. The would was washed and glued shut. Thank goodness no stitches.

The scar was healing okay until the blue crayon surfaced! Yikes, we didn't get all of the crayon out. Now almost 6 months later, she has a blue crayon "tattoo" / scar very prominently on her face.

Our Ped said to wait, DH wants to see a specialist. I called a highly recommended Dermatologist, but the kind woman on the phone said that I should probably see someone else, but she couldn't give medical advice since she wasn't a nurse. I made the appt for Sept anyway....... But it's a LONG drive, so now I'm thinking I should try to figure out what type of Dr can help her.

    Any suggestions?

My friend just had something similar removed from his face with a laser, FYI. I think he saw a cosmetic dermatologist.

i would just tell my pedi that i don't want to wait and who do i go to see. but i do think a dermatologist would be the way to go

Poor little Sydney!! :hug99: Why does the pedi want to wait? Does (s)he think it will work itself out? For how long? I wouldn't trust that and would want to take her to someone asap too. I agree w/the pp about asking the pedi for a referral now, but if you don't want to or they won't give a name at this time you might just have to spend some time on the phone tracking down the right person. I don't know what the difference is between a cosmetic dermatologist & a plastic surgeon, but I would make some calls and see who they lead to.

I would call both. I think the pedi is waiting because they don't like to do any eye/facial surgery on little ones, and it is purely cosmetic to them. However, to you, it's a big deal! And it would be to me too. I would call both specialists and see what they think, go in for the consult and then go from there. :hug99: Poor Sydney! :hug99:

My son has a cleft lip and palate so I have some experience.....look for a Pediatric Surgeon...either plastic or craniofacial surgeon. I am not sure about the dermatologist! I think the pediatric has a great impact on working with kids! They also see a lot of faces...that is their focus!!

I would look for a pediatric plastic surgeon as well. I've always had any moles or other skin problems on my face taken care of by the plastic surgeon vs. the dermotologist b/c the plastic surgeons have better "sewing" skills when it comes to scarring, etc.

Holy cow! I never heard of such a thing...now something else for me to worry about! Did you call the crayon company? I bet they hear this all the time and can tell you what experiences that they have had! be sure to take pictures of her so when she gets older she can laugh and have evidence!

thx for advice. Yes, i'll make both appts w/ derm and pediatric plastic surgeon - which I'm thinking might be better at this point.........

i wouldn't worry about it happening to you Sarah. It's one of those freak things. I've never heard of another child w/ this particular booboo. Kids sometimes get pencils in their skin. But crayons are rare. I have plenty of pics. I didn't call the crayon company. Not sure which one as they were crayons from a restaurant. We shouldn't have let her run w/ it. But it was their bday and we were just trying to get out of the restaurant. I never thought a crayon could puncture skin!

I actually think it builds character and makes it really easy to tell them apart, and makeup would easily cover it. But DH is freaked about it and wants something done NOW.
