My newborns are still less than a week old, i have been mostly breast feeding and now have started supplimenting with 2-3 bottles a day each. (Mostly when i am so exhausted i neeeeeeed sleep.) they have jaundice and i am worried they are not having enough bowel movements or are not eating enough maybe. Since they changed from the black tar b.m. the yellowy one is not much most of the time maybe like the size of a dime. Is this normal>? i remember my other kids seems like they were pooping many times a day.

as long as they are having plenty of wet diapers ( I think around 7-8 at least a day) they are probably fine. formula can clog them up and they will not poop everyday. breast fed babies can go up to a week without pooping b/c the nutrients in breast milk is used so much better there is little waste.
congrats on your babies and keep up the good work!

yup, wet diapers ar ethe key. My doc says that the "normal" range for poops vary gretly. Can be 1 ever 10 days to 10 a day.

Here is a great link for you to check out:

"A breastfed baby should have six to eight wet diapers a day until around six weeks of age; and five to six wet diapers a day thereafter; and two or more good-sized bowel movements every day for the first 6-8 weeks"

What my Ped told me to expect is 1st day, 1 poop. 2nd day, 2 poops, 3rd three poops. Up to six poops a day. If they haven't had one in over 24 hrs, they recommend calling the doctor.

One of my girls was going once every 2-3 days and the other was going at least 3 times per day. They were both formula fed. So it varies greatly.

One of my girls only went #2 about once a week but no one ever seemed concerned about it (except me =) Once she went 10 days without pooping and we took her to the doctor and RIGHT BEFORE (thank goodness) I got her undressed to weigh her ... she pooped ... BIG TIME! I ran out of wipes and had to use half a box of theirs! She probably weighed a pound less than she did pre-poop! =)

Anyway, she was exclusively breast fed and my docs always said as long as she was wetting diapers and her weights were good and she acted like "herself" then they weren't concerned. We did give her suppositories a few times when she just seemed miserable. Never failed, mere seconds after the suppository she would fill up a diaper! Now that we are on solids, too ... she is much more "regular" =)

up until about 4-6 weeks every time they ate they pooped (formula fed) then it went to every other day...once we started solids they poop at least twice if not 3 times daily (just about every time they eat)
