What is going on?

DD consistently slept 10-12 hrs until last week. ALL OF A sudden, she's been getting up more and more often so I attributed it to a growth spurt. She'd nurse and go back to sleep. However, it gets worse and worse!

Last night was awful. She went down at 6:45pm and proceeded to wake up every two hours. She had one three hr stretch from 11:30 to 3:15am, but then got up every hr after that--4AM, 5AM, 6AM. I don't think she's hungry, she'd suckle a bit and then fall easily asleep at the breast. I put her back in her crib with no problem, but she'd wake back up an hr or two later!!

What gives??? Is this normal? DS gets up once a night and I get her immediately so she doesn't wake him up.
Please help!! She's almost 5 months. I just want to know this too shall pass.....

I would think either growth spurt, or possibly teeth?

I unfortunatley don't have any good advice, but I can tell you that mine have been doing the same thing. They are the same age as yours, and about 3wks ago they were consistently sleeping 10-12hrs in a row, but are now up twice/night to eat. and, my dd goes to bed at 6pm and then proceeds to wake every hour and cries for a few minutes up until about 10pm, and then starts to wake for the day to start at around 5am (I don't usually go and get her until 6am tho). I am curious what others have to say about why this goes on. I am hoping we are all getting closer to a full night of sleep.

Do you let them cry? DD cries with her eyes closed....I don't let her cry more than a few minutes. Maybe I should?

We too went through this phase and then it passed. We didn't do anything different, we just worked through it. We offered food and orajel even though there were no signs of teeth.

When my DS did this (and exactly this - he STTN for about a week and then went through a stage where he woke constinually), it was because his reflux had gotten really bad. Once we got that back under control, he started sleeping much better.

My DD is doing the exact same thing! I don't know what it is... They both had been sleeping 11 hours a night for last month or so, then these last 4 days, she has been waking up at 230 am and then every 30 minutes after that point. I put her paci in and she goes back to sleep, but then wakes back up. She doesn't want to eat, and I don't see any teeth. If anyone else has other ideas, I would love to hear them. I don't know what to do. I hope this passes soon (for you too!!)

we went through this a couple of times. I would say growth spurt....maybe, possibly teething.

So glad it's not just me! These nights are really getting to DH and I. I find myself dreading them.

Mine did the exact same thing at this exact same age. They went from good sleepers to needing "paci runs" as we call them at our house 6+ times each -- and it was KILLING ME! I was counting down to 6 months since I decided that was when they would be old enough, in my mind, to CIO. However, on a good note -- at 5 months 2 days -- they started STTN all on their own. They went from 7+ wakings a piece to STTN (12 hours) -- and havn't looked back since. So, you may just be around the corner from more sleep. Hang in there!!

To answer your question, we DO NOT go and get my dd when she fusses/cries every hour from 6pm to 10pm - I do let her CIO a bit. I put a timelimit on it of 15min, and she has never gone past that, if she did I would probably consider going in and shushing/patting, depending on what type of cry it was. If it was a hard cry, I would probably try shush/pat, if it was more of a fuss/cry, then I would leave her. I do not think in my case it is teething as I can't see or feel anything coming in. I think it is perhaps just a phase they going thro, potentially a growth spurt.
I have my fingers crossed for both of us that they start magically STTN and soon!
